Hi Slow Poke....
You overhauled your engine the cost effective way.... I did the math taking in consideration of 25hr AP's (training) 150 hour inspection & 300 hour TBO - it came to a staggering R 185 / hour just for maintenance worst case scenario. This figure excludes insurance, fuel/oil, HP repayments, medical etc. Compare that figure to a big old blik engine TBO'ed at 1500 hours..... a staggering R 277 000!!!!
Time for new engines - I don't care what anyone says! I don't want to sit PIC and say to myself oh damn, that's 1,2 or 3 hours closer to crank replacement etc.
I like the SMART idea or DIESEL option. The link to a 80 / 100 hp diesel engine on this thread has a targeted TBO of 2500 hours if I am not mistaken. Do the math now - even after initial capital cost incurred for purchase & installation - oh, and it is more economical!

Hi John, yep, like the idea of the smart diesel a lot. will definitleyl not be installing a 582/ overhauling my 582 / replacing a crank on my 582 again
The time for change is NOW
I also enquired about the AP course and was told that it would help me '0' because you are not allowed to sign out you own plane
in any case, looking forward to a new powerplant in the near future
will be putting money away, just not for a new crank

Sounds gr8, but how optimistic can I get??
The only question that I need an answer for of the specs is the weight. You guys can keep the rest a secret.
The reason I like my 503 is that it is a light engin. My trike will not be able to lift a 60-70kg engin, because then no pax anymore.
regards,

From the HKS website:
So if the local boytjies can't come up with the goods...2005.05.09
You may be interested to know that after 50 hours trouble free flying the motor is run in and now delivers approximately 10 % more power than new, with the trike at sea level I obtain 1000ft per minute climb out (582 is 1100 ft) so I am very pleased with the performance. Fuel burn solo 8 litres per hour. It is very obvious that the engine requires a good run in period before it delivers full power. I use Shell synthetic 5w-40w oil. Oil temp at about 90 degrees C. No oil leaks at all.
Cheers Paul
