Prop pitch

Postby Woody » Mon Dec 24, 2007 1:00 pm

Hi all
Need some advice on prop pitch 63"31 with gearbox 2.58:1 current.
I fly a scout 503 dcdi with stream wing....the problem is as follows
1)Running full rpm 6600 from take off.
2)Climb out at about 150 f/p/m
3)When in the cruise i have to maintain full rpm to stay airborn and for this reason by brand new comms
Pilot weight about 85 kg,pax about 80 kg and fuel load about 30 litres

Was advised that wing is "dead" can't get comment from the pro's in that field. Some better comments was that the prop pitch is way to fine and it does not create thrust.
My question is???
1) To what safe length prop can I go or buy the same length but change pitch
2)What is a good pitch to run i.c.w. the length.
My previous windlass had about a 72" prop and had climb rate of about 500 f/min
Will appreciate any help :D :D
Oh... did try phone Peter de Necker but he is out of town.
THANX

Hi San
Eisch- It is for this reason that i am posting this on the forum to get input from the guys.Reading some some of the related topics on the forum put my mind in the direction of thrust. My logics says if im running 6600rpm with bar nutral at 55m/h there is nothing wrong with the engin.IF that rpm can be "converted" into thrust by changing either prop length or length and pitch i should have much better climb out.

Maybe i must ask the forum guys to give me there current box type prop pitch and length so can make an educated call when going another route.
Let's see what comes up.

Johnny, you just answered yourself.
Look for something in the region of 68 x 36. Should give you about 60mph at 6000rpm.
But don't ask me about tweaking the wing :D

So whats the most "common" size/pitch on a 2,58 box in use on a 503 flying around the JHB region :?:.. does anyone have a graph or two showing optimal specs for altitudes??? whats considered "optimal" thrust:RPM vs too much pitch that starts decreasing the RPM to a point that the overall thrust starts to decline........ do any of the guys with the sharp pencils, thick glasses and white coats want to throw some figures around for us :?:
