PPL looking to build cheaper hours - JHB

Postby SupaFly » Wed Dec 19, 2007 11:59 am

Good morning

This is my first post on the microlighters forum.

I have tried without success to convince a fixed wing owner to let me hire and fly at reasonable rates, with extremely limited success on a Cessna 152(still hardly affordable).

I stay in Fairland, JHB and have a PPL with 70 hrs under my belt and find it increasingly difficult to afford flying. I work at Denel Aviation next to OR Thambo.

Anyone close with a safe and affordable aircraft I can get some PPL hours on, please let me know -0<

Last ditch, otherwise I might just give up on the PPL route and go MPL or Gyro direct.

Thanks

As a ppl pilot I am sure you can build hours on a 3-axis MPL registered microlight such as a bush baby or a cheetah You would just need to do a conversion. RV4ker would be the best guy to ask re this.

Give one of the training schools a call. Their details are available here

Thanks Morph

I have been looking at the training schools but don't know the airfields as well as I do the large airports. Can you suggest any good ones close to me?

Both please.

If close to home I will only be able to fly weekends.

If close to work I will only be able to fly early mornings and late afternoons, but more regularly.

I would keen PPL. With new part 61 it may be worth something in future and will be difficult to get back. You can fly any of the 3 axis jobs with PPL. Just get convex with PPL instructor (which may be a problem in some cases) or do a convex to MPL (I did in 5hrs) and fly on both MPL and PPL. Painful but can be done.

Close to Oli Tambo
Try Petit (Andy Casperson). He runs a school there and they had a couple 3 axis jobs. Telephone 011 965 0764 Cellular Andy : 082 651 7317 Email Andy :andyk@intekom.co.za http://www.microlightadventures.co.za/directions.htm
Also try Alexi at Cheetah Factory. They may have a demonstrator available?
Baps, Sr and Microland may also be options?

Closer to Home
Flo M comes to mind? Cel. 082 666 two thousand
Can also try Armand at Eagles Creek?

PS
Can fly anything (3axis) on PPL. I am told only certain hrs "count", but I have yet to have that confirmed? Many guys are doing Comm hrs on Jab's, Cheetah's etc.

PPS
I know the guys at FASI have a Motor Falke (35hp VW type motor glider). It is a slow go nowhere fast type, but if you can land that you can land anything. Costs (Full price) <R250/hr... Excellent trainer and hour builder. Try Paul S or Russel Dold from EAA. I think they both have a share in it.

PPPS
Cubby may become available from FABB during next year as soon as I have "paid" off the maintenance in hrs...

If CAA weren't so full of it, I would buy the Smith Termite and the Windlass for R28K & Sue S's Air creation Racer for hire and fly, but I am told no H&F unless approved designs?

How does the H&F market work (If at all) I have seen very few ML's (3 axis or trike) available for H&F. Why is this? Comments from guy's H&F would be appreciated. Are these aeries insured or are they flown at risk?

Not legal to hire and fly, at all, in our aircraft.

Only way to get past this, is to sign the aircraft out for training, through a scoool, maybe advanced training if you already have a lic.

That what I been told. Sad as I think it would intro more guys to the sport and there would be some lekka hangar talk.

I am trying to find out how to go about getting a Part 96 license, but CAA is chaos so not holding my breath....

PS
I dream of having Avis of the air. (A come try and fly before you buy type setup with Trikes, 3 axis and obviously a couple RV's all to hire and fly at will). Problem is CAA and 3rd party legal liability. They have made some ground on this in USA and I can only hope that CAA follow suit once sport pilot license comes along.

Crosswinds hiore and fly a Thunderbird that is registered for PPL Hr building. It is based in Tarlton just outside Krugersdorp.
You will have to do a check flight and a conversion with their own instructor. Some PPL's have taken up to 7hrs to get used to the lighter aerie getting their feet to be more busy busy for the rudder.
