MPL and PPL

I've done a quick search on the forum and couldn't find an answer to my question.

A friend of mine started his PPL, and on 9 hrs all kinda sh!t hit the fan at the flight school. He is continuing now, but for his own reasons, with his MPL on an Thunderbird that he just bought.

My question - leaving the theory, exams, and conversions etc. out of the equation - what is being taught the extra 15 hrs for PPL ?

I understand a 3 hr cross country are to be done for PPL, but on the same aerie, say a Thunderbird or Bushbaby or whatever, what is being let out of the sillabus for MPL, or if I can refrase, why the extra hrs for PPL ?

People that do PPL are generally slower learners than pepole that do MPL :twisted:

If done on same machine the additional hrs are IMHO just that, additional hrs, but if you going to fly the bliks, the systems are sometimes more complex (read dangerooooooss if you F. them up) - Things like fuel systems, CofG, loading etc. A C172 or PA28 at Jhb alt will bite if you stick 4 oukes in it, fill it and blast off. Remeber PPL gives you right to fly any aerie (even 747)* once you have the PP license, thus they tend to do some advanced training as well if you are ready for lic after 40/45hrs. Many MPL guys do not finish or get comfortable in the 25hrs, so tend to take almost 40hrs in any case. It a hangaover from the 3 axis back yard specials. The Mac CDL vs C172 for eg. Mac systems are simple (by design) and thus usually take less time to master. The C172 is a far more complex (initially) and thus takes slightly longer... Just my opinion...

Just a quick question here,fr those who might be able to help out,after my completion on PPL,what are the requirements and procedures to do a conversion for MPL?Is it possible,and can anyone perhaps tell how to go forth ? Thank you!

If it before the new part 61 comes out then it a simple convex (5hrs) and some paperwork. If after part 61 then I am told it will be whole new license? :wink:

Yip :wink: - but the curiosity is from my side, as I am following his progress for interest sake. Cannot believe it took me 41 years to start getting an interest in aviation - now i can't get enough. 8)

What's the train of thought (only bar talk) that e.g. trikes are more intense (sensitive to conditions) and because of doing 3 circuits to one blik, have more intense use of 25 hrs?

Another one. How would the new light licence effect anyone wanting to do a trike / 3 axis convex.?

Would it still imply going a conversion or require more?

Hallo manne
I had an MPL and after a 10 years wanted to change my life insurance.
My consultant advised me that it is better to do a PPL and pay about R800 per month less on my premium. :shock: Why do MPL guys get nailed like that? :evil: You pay more than Bikers, and I wonder even more than smokers.But you have to do a medical to be fit for a licence? I think its unfare. Cant we do something about this? I have a PPL licence but the freedom of MPL is in my heart. :D

I have just renewed my med aid/life insurance, fly with a MPL, stated that if you do in excess of 100hrs per annum and have more than 500hrs then the discounts apply. Nothing stated about PPL or MPL. I got the discounts.

Take another look as you may have missed something ??

Have PPL and MPL and initially paid R10/R10000 penalty then came down to R1.75/10000 and was told yesterday that it will be discounted further this year to R1/10000. It's a load of crap. Somebody is steeling our money :cry:

Ahhhh,so i take the part 61 has not come into play yet?It would be great if I can do a conversion onto MPL as well.Microlight certainly gives you different meaning to flying :) Thanks for the info!

I speak under correction but if you've got a PPL and want to fly a three-axis microlight its just a simple conversion? No need to do the whole MPL. Not sure about trikes though.

At moment both are a simple conversion from PPL to MPL. (I did 5 hrs on Cheetah for 3 axis MPL and 4.8hrs on trike (although I never finished it I was at solo test stage). Once the new part 61 comes into effect it is a different license and as I understand from the guys at CAA (as much as that is possible) MPL (recreation license) will need to be done from scratch for all types (Weight shirt, Gyro, 3 axis etc).

That why I am trying to renew 3 axis MPL, finish trike MPL get MGPL and get 3 axis instructors rating before new part 61 becomes law. Part 61 will also make provision for "com" MPL allowing flips, banner towing, glider towing, spraying, observation for reward etc without the current one fits all instructors rating.

This is all based on my understanding and my interpretation of Part 61 as it was released for comment. It may have changed & I may be well off the mark.... :oops: :oops: :wink: Maybe Mike B can comment as I know he has been working on it tirelessly....

As far as you understand when Part 61 comes into effect will the current PPL flying a microlight be able to carry flying both under his PPL or will he/she have to redo the Recreational Licence? - IOW Is there some kind of 'grandfather' clause?
