912 EGT Question

Postby Morph » Sun Nov 12, 2006 8:53 am

Hi all,

I have been looking at this engine and instruments I bought and noticed there are no EGT probes or gauges. It has all the oil temp and pressure, dual cht, revs etc. I spoke to a mate who has a Foxbat and he too does not have any EGT's. Are they neccessary on a 4-stroke 912. What value would I derive out of having them installed?

Exactly the same benefit as in a 2 stroke.

Install them 2 inches from the engine case (which translates to 5 inches from the exhaust valve).
The values should be about 1475º F on cruise and 1655º F max.

So Duckie,

If the one gauge is mounted on front xhorst in the cooling air and the other at back of oppisite cylinder bank (much less airflow), how much can the temp difference be :?:

You gonna have a hard time reading the gauge if it's mounted on the exhaust :D :D
Rather mount it inside the plane on the instrument panel.

The probes are unafeccted by airflow because the working ends are inside the exhaust pipes.

Duckie,

My 912's exhausts don't have EGT probes installed. Do you know what thread they need be? I want to get an exhaust company to weld some nuts on. There is also some honderkak welding that I want them to fix. Then I am going to have the exhaust sprayed with alluminium to protect it against the elements.

I'm stand to be corrected here but I think they are 8x1 mm thread. You can probably double check with Rainier, just to be sure although I'm reasonably confident about the size.
