Ditto for a strobe in a prop. I gave my strobe a haircut this way, blew the replacement on the first flight, convinced them to give me a 2nd replacement at no-cost, and now that's packed up as well. So I'm writing off the R1,400 I paid for the $%!$! thing and will look for a different make & model. School fees.

Ek werk my blerrie gat af. En die slangetjie is grounded at the moment pending some TLC - I need to clean the air filters (waiting for the K&N kit to arrive), change plugs and I decided to switch out to marine oil so I need to do that too. Maybe I should post this under Technical but you guys will know in any case - the rubber seal where the sensors connect on top of the oil tank is leaking and it's not sold as a spare part. Short of buying a new rotax tank (for the tidy sum of R2,200 (**) ), any ideas how I can fix this? Also, in switching out the oil how pedantic do I have to be not to let marine & chainsaw mix?

Hey Jaco....so bly jy lewe ^

No need to explain...I'm also working 6 days a week at this stage. :( Too much graft without flying is just kaksleg

Sorry to hear about the issues on the slangetjie, hope you get it right asap (with minimal damage to the bank balance) I leave the technical advice up to more qualified personel :)

Steve Bosch sent me an sms inviting us again to his runway....seems to be a bit of a challenge to us! He says that the record for trikes arriving at his spot is 8....I am working this weekend but why dont you and the rhino boys try and beat that? He just asks you to let him know how many will be coming so he can have some sammies ready for you. 8)

Please call him guys, his hospitality is appreciated.

EDIT: On second thoughts...check the weather guys!

Hi Jaco happy new year. (^^) (^^)

I have some ideas but give me a pm or next time I see you we can talk. Went for my medical today and visited with Fred Blockland afterwards. Reminiscing and talking flying technical... (^^) ..it was great. He was my first instructor. I went through 4.  Most of them still alive

I will be at Springs and Brakpan this weekend for a new years reunion.

Had a leaker visit & brekkie with the guys at Springs. Only got away there at 1....unfortunately no flying. :(

Jaco, look at Rotax, Service Instuction, SI-2ST-008, "Suitable operating fluids for Rotax 2-stroke engines...", paragraph, 3. The Note. ##

There are so many debabtes around oil and it just depend with which AP you talk. I have read even on this forum and each oil has its merits. Here is a link (URL) of OILS that were tested on 2 stroke engines; I leave it up to the reader to decide.

http://www.ultralightnews.com/features/oiltest.htm

Another article:
http://www.theultralightplace.com/choosing_oil.htm

Based on the above article it make sense for training schools to use chain saw oil as the engines are continiously in circuit (stop start type throttle) whereas the scenic cabbage patch flyer are rather constant throttle throughout the flight; in this case marine (outboard) oil.

There is also a believe that a 582 runs cooler than a 503; not according to ROTAX.
quote from link above "These 532 and 582 engines run at internal temperatures similar to the air-cooled Rotax engines, as evidenced by their use of the same spark plug."

100% Faiz. (^^)

The debate goes on. In their SI, Rotax specifically excludes Marine 2-Stroke oil. They recommend Castrol 2T, which is a motorcycle oil and is generally available. Maximum combustion temp for a 503 & 582 is 655 deg C. This is significantly hotter than any outboard. ## Rotax also refers to this difference. ##

I also do not believe the choice is extremely critical. I know some pilots who only use marine, others only synthetic, others only Chain Saw others only 2T. If you speak to the guys at the coast they swear by marine for its corrosion inhibiting properties. Inland generally, schools use Chain Saw. vhpy The choice is yours. puff

My Rotex have 900 hrs on the clock.
I bought it at 320 hrs.
I use any available mineral two stroke oil.
Whether it is mobil, caltex, lawnmower, chainsaw, outboard or what have you..As long as it is two-stroke oil.
Have a nice day. ## ## ##

Hi Paula. missing your place...Elands. Can we come back?? vhpy

Some Trikes @ ML with 582's have done 1600hrs with the original crank on Super Chainsaw. At Petit, one 503...that I know of....has done 2000 plus....same oil. vhpy Choice is yours. :?: Speak to the AP's to find out how it works...it is not just the oil. vhpy Rotax engines, if looked after properly, go way beyond their TBO before a TBO! vhpy

Sorg vir haar, streel en pamperlang vir haar, en sy sal jou dien vir jaaaare... vhpy Jy moet haar ook gereeld gebruik  Lank staan maak haar moeg. (**) Klink bekend

See you all Saturday. WX looks K@@@@@K though (**) (**) (**)
