Ditto for a strobe in a prop. I gave my strobe a haircut this way, blew the replacement on the first flight, convinced them to give me a 2nd replacement at no-cost, and now that's packed up as well. So I'm writing off the R1,400 I paid for the $%!$! thing and will look for a different make & model. School fees.mulderpm wrote:A GPS in a prop.....neither will be functional afterwards

Ek werk my blerrie gat af. En die slangetjie is grounded at the moment pending some TLC - I need to clean the air filters (waiting for the K&N kit to arrive), change plugs and I decided to switch out to marine oil so I need to do that too. Maybe I should post this under Technical but you guys will know in any case - the rubber seal where the sensors connect on top of the oil tank is leaking and it's not sold as a spare part. Sorry to hear about the issues on the slangetjie, hope you get it right asap (with minimal damage to the bank balance) I leave the technical advice up to more qualified personel

He just asks you to let him know how many will be coming so he can have some sammies ready for you.

I have some ideas but give me a pm or next time I see you we can talk. Went for my medical today and visited with Fred Blockland afterwards. Reminiscing and talking flying technical...





I will be at Springs and Brakpan this weekend for a new years reunion.

Had a leaker visit & brekkie with the guys at Springs. Only got away there at 1....unfortunately no flying.

There are so many debabtes around oil and it just depend with which AP you talk. I have read even on this forum and each oil has its merits. Here is a link (URL) of OILS that were tested on 2 stroke engines; I leave it up to the reader to decide.

Based on the above article it make sense for training schools to use chain saw oil as the engines are continiously in circuit (stop start type throttle) whereas the scenic cabbage patch flyer are rather constant throttle throughout the flight; in this case marine (outboard) oil.
There is also a believe that a 582 runs cooler than a 503; not according to ROTAX.

Rotax also refers to this difference.
I also do not believe the choice is extremely critical. I know some pilots who only use marine, others only synthetic, others only Chain Saw others only 2T. If you speak to the guys at the coast they swear by marine for its corrosion inhibiting properties. Inland generally, schools use Chain Saw.

My Rotex have 900 hrs on the clock.
I bought it at 320 hrs.
I use any available mineral two stroke oil.
Whether it is mobil, caltex, lawnmower, chainsaw, outboard or what have you..As long as it is two-stroke oil.

Some Trikes @ ML with 582's have done 1600hrs with the original crank on Super Chainsaw. At Petit, one 503...that I know of....has done 2000 plus....same oil.
Choice is yours.
Speak to the AP's to find out how it works...it is not just the oil.
Rotax engines, if looked after properly, go way beyond their TBO before a TBO!
