Re: Coffee at Jakkalsdans
Thanks for the visit this morning John. It was nice to put a face to the name. You're right about Rwy. 30 and GT's. especially with all the dew on the grass early in the mornings.

Re: Coffee at Jakkalsdans
I figured that I would post a separate post titled "BEWARE when landing on a MOIST GRASSY Runway!" viewtopic.php?f=13&t=20057 so that others can learn from my experience at Jakkalsdans this morning.
So, read the report, look at the pictures and watch the video, and then please pen some comments!
Thank you Louis and your wonderful wife Fransa for the hospitality! That home-made bread was worth ending up in a bush for!

To Tribal Croc and other GT owners: Would I fly a GT into Jakkalsdans? NO!!!! (it is VERY short, on landing and take off!)

Thanks LouisLouis Cole wrote:TC I have a X-rwy. Rwy. 30/12 approximately 180 m. that I generally land on and 05/23 approximately 280 m. that I generally take off from. Unfortunately both have power lines at the end. No problem for the Raptor but I don't know enough about the Quicks. Flo has landed here before with his school trike and he would be able to advise you better. Would love to meet you and see a GT land here.Tribal Croc wrote:Can you give us a little bit more info on your runway ?

I will speak to Flo but I think the 280m runway will be just just to short

I will practice on my runway and see in what distance I can get the GT to stop

Hopefully I will see you soon even if its just to buzz you

HaHa! I know, it's far easy to not share these somewhat embarrassing moments and to just let them go but I am a strong believer in sharing for the benefit of others to learn!Bundy wrote:This pic of you stuck in the thorn bush is definately one for the Bar John![]()

If it happens AGAIN maybe the name should stick! Right now it might be a bit premature!

Re: Coffee at Jakkalsdans
Spent the day cutting and pruning those trees that caused John to alter his glide scope and land too deep and I'm amazed at the difference. I've been flying this runway since 1994 and I guess you don't notice the trees gradually getting bigger. You just deal with it every time you land. I've decided not to take John's bush out for obvious reasons. Anybody know an appropriate botanical name ? Maybe an arrestor like on an aircraft carrier could work.
I think John must be commended for sharing this experience in an open forum as most pilots would be embarrassed to do so. I've had many incidents in my early flying career which were due solely to pilot error which I was just too embarrassed to mention to anybody. As a student pilot I listened to the experienced pilots talking about their accidents and near misses and saying that you learn more from others' incidents than in manuals. I remember naively saying at the time that I don't want to learn that way but I now know that they knew what they were talking about. From my experiences I know that when you are faced with a situation and have to make split second decisions, despite what the manual or any checklist says, you focus on the immediate job at hand and that is to land and stop with the least damage to yourself and your trike. So well done John and I really hope there is no serious damage to the Beautiful Seductive Temptress.

Re: Coffee at Jakkalsdans
Hey John, glad you OK
I watched the video of your landing and can't critisize it at all, you werent too fast or very far off the mark for that matter - The wet runway obviously the major problem
As for GT's and short runway's - Not my cup of tea. The GT can land quite short as TC mentions with the brakes on both back wheels too, but in wet conditions we probably would have had the same problem and would have approached a little faster too
I personally would not land there but will come fly over some time

Re: Coffee at Jakkalsdans

John, tho not funny at the time...my tummy is sore and I have tears in my eyes of laughing..the vid is awesome..woohoooo....low and slow on approach n cut mags on touch down

Flip..this is one for the bar like Bundy said....love it..face first in the bush...Bushwhacker John for sure

Oh man,I can watch that over and over

Don't you wish there was a wire across threshold of runway and you had an arresting hook...

I think we should start a thread for all the funny landing mishaps...emphasis on funny,no point we laugh and the dude's aerie is trashed

Nice one John,I learned alot from this...the GT's rear breaks here would have caused a handbrake turn effect..

Have a lekka one

This is your smiley
