The Emotional bond

Postby Bundy » Wed Mar 21, 2012 6:02 am

What is it that makes us feel so connected to our planes? I never fully understood this till this weekend.

Trikes are unique aircraft. There are no flaps, rudders, ailerons, elevators, sticks or yokes. When you fly a trike your arms are directly linked to the wings. The wind buffets your face and hands, you feel every movement in the wing right on your fingertips....and in turbulence right down your spine! It's like pilot and plane are one being. It literally feels like YOU are flying through the air...not sitting in a machine. Like a Knight and his faithful steed. (!!)

The profound sense of loss when you stare at your broken aerie is quite overwhelming (and I'm not talking about money here)... like I'm attending the funeral of good friend.

Dont worry... I'm not losing the plot. (or maybe I am  )

I know we will find another plane and undoubtedly form the same bond again.... but it really is a wierd feeling.

Yeah ... I know what you mean.....
When people talk about an aircraft an call it by it's registration, that registration seems to personify the craft, like it's a live being, a child or something to be proud of. I never understood how people could be so attached to rag and tube until got my own. I have never had the same feeling with cars or bikes.

I hear you Alan,

The Pink Lady has a similar spot in my heart. It is like a part of the family, not many un-pilots would understand!

Let "Dere Be Pieces" rest!

Time, effort and commitment will make her fly again. So glad the PIC walked away!

Alan

I hear you, we get attached to our aircraft and it is emotional for sure

All of my airies have had names vhpy

As you know, your airy DBP used to be mine and I too felt terrible and sad after hearing of the crash, however very relieved nobody was hurt. PS i called DBP "The starship enterprise - to boldly go where no man has gone......of sommer net Harties toe!".

You guys will bounce back and bond with a even better aircraft, these things do happen in microlighting unfortunately

When you and I meet we will toast your "Dark Blue Princess" and my "Starship Enterprise"
