Well I couldn't have asked for a better morning to celebrate the 100th hour on the Xenon (^^) . After a weeks rain and everything washed clean the air was clean and without a bump this morning with visibilty just short of forever. One of those mornings that make you appreciate life and the fact that we are all blessed to be able to fly. I set off initially for just a quick flight but after an hour and a half was forced home as I stupidly only put 25litres of fuel in.
I have been struggling with my landings lately and couldn't understand why. It felt like I was coming in too fast, although the MGL only showed 55-60Mph and I am fanatic about airspeed on landing, or rounding out too low, but it just didn't feel right. Realized this morning on comparing the ASi with the MGL that the MGL was wrong (will need to recallibrate) at low speed and instead of coming in to land @ 60Mph I came in @ 85Mph. (Sorry Low Level know this gave you a fright the other day    ).
So to top this near perfect morning with this new found information I did a perfect zero ground roll landing, something I haven't done in a long time. You tend to struggle to bleed your gyro from 85 Mph to 0 Mph 10 feet above the ground.
The Xenon really gave me a lot of joy this past 100 hours as I am sure my silly smile   after each flight reveals.

Hi Mak

I went out shortly after you this morning and returned shortly before you. The conditions were exceptionally good and even my landing was acceptable.

Wow, Mak, that describes a similar situation in Cape Town this morning. Perfect flying weather after weeks of howling winds.
We are truly blessed to experience these days from the air.

Interestingly, I also had a similar situation with my M24. Damn thing just would not land. Kept floating and floating until eventually, long after I wanted it to, it would settle. I realized somthing may be amiss when other pilots flying with me (straight and level) kept asking me why I was flying so fast. ASI was reading 70-80, MGL confirmed this. One of them mentioned that his ASI was reading 15mph less than mine. Their 70mph was my 55 - my 70 was their 85. Flew a triangle and checked the groundspeed - Voila, the airspeed was in knots/nautical miles, not statute miles.

BINGO! when I rounded out 50 it worked the way it should. Still not sure where/why excatly this is the case and will report when I have conclusively found the problem/setting. I have a steam ASI guage and 2 MGL's running off a Rdac. Will get the smart boys in to sort it out for me, in the meantime - at least I know my readings are in knots and not statute miles. Makes quite a difference.

Fly safe

Just read through the newest African Pilot. Not only is there an artical about the North-Meets-South, but also and interview with Juanita flying the Xenon. Well done!

Gyro's are getting a lot of exposure!!

Hi guys. Are we all back in the saddle again ?
Things have been happening fast and furious over the last few weeks.Great Juanita!! Nice press and fantastic website. Well done ! Give that goose a bells!! (^^)
Very sad gyro accident again this weekend. Johan Roodt apparently flew into telephone cables near Belfast ... innige innige simpatie aan die familie.I had such terrible flashbacks when I read about this in the Beeld as the scenario is so similar to Filipes accident just over a year ago.Do you guys know the old folksong "Where have all the flowers gone" ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKvdPsnkPC0

haunting refrain...When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn...

And there I take off with my Xenon , so excited for my first flight of the new year. 10 minutes Tedderfield outbound and my fuel flow gradually starts dropping. 20lph...15lph...12lph... o moer ...8lph! at this stage the 180 has been duly executed and all sorts of forced landing areas scanned. My maag begin sulke grom geluide maak. Cold sweat on the brow... not a lot but just enough to run into my eyes and make them water. I rub my eyes with my hands which still have some residue of fuel on them after checking the fuel for condensation before take off.. Now my eyes are burning like hell and I can only just see the fuel flow dropping to 2lph at 5200RPM and 36"MP.HKGK !!
Decision time. The crop circles to my right or go for the runway while the engine is purring.Second option takes preference .Short base onto short finals and just as I thought I was home and dry the fuel flow dropped to ZERO and ...
nothing happened and I landed safely with the fuel pressure in the green all the time.We then earthed the RDAC to the engine block and all has been normal since then.We live and learn and so does the factory back in Poland hopefully too ... (**)
Thanks Braam for always being there to sort any hickup out. Xenon is growing in leaps and bounds. How many are we now? 11?? With the Rand /Euro at the moment I was just wondering... Wyk satan !!!
Loved flying to the vaaldam to see the sluices open this morning and landed as the first bowls were being rolled in the black clouds overhead. As I pulled her into the hanger the heavens opened and that is our flying for this weekend!
Xenon still going great and the joy and serious love affair with this incredible baby continues.
Saw Cilliers overhead Langebaan on New Years day with ZU RDV and my first Xenon looked great in the air. Couldnt wait to get back home and do the same thing. Check out his pic of a Whale and her calf taken from the Xenon along the coast.Ok windgat Kapenaars we have beautiful mine dumps which you don't have !!
Enjoy the flying in 2011 and maybe consider adding just a few feet to your usual hight above ground as a New Years resolution??? LOOKING FORWARD TO GARIEP ##

The Prince of Oranje is on short finals. Joep's orange Xenon is completing her final testflights and will then be heading towards an RSA which looks very similar to Poland without the snow at this stage.
Once they are happy with her it takes 2 days to crate and a week later old Joep can open his little package on South African soil.
Joep, ik wens u vele uren van gelukkig en veilig vliegen in uw mooie Xenon.Ja, ik spreek Nederlands. Mijn voorouders waren glasblazers uit Amstedam!
I notice that Celier still installs the "rope" for the trim. All over the world ,Xenon owners are customising their gyros by installing electric trims. It looks so much better and works so much better because it IS so much better. Joep, the local boytjies will install the electric trim for you in 2 seconds and it costs peanuts. Eric Torr has designed and built a custom electric trim for the Xenon.I just cannot understand why they do not install electric trims in the factory from the beginning (**) Celier may one day wake up and listen to his customers
Looking forward to seeing the flying Dutchman in person at the Gariep Jamboree!
The heavy 80% rains were mostly in the afternoons over the weekend so I clocked up another 6 hrs on Saturday and Sunday. My machine is such a joy to fly and I just can't get enough . Went to check out the latest flow at the Vaaldam. Wow!! Quite a sight.I'm up to just on 80 hrs in 3 months and loving each second. The turbo boost control is working beautifully. I can even manage my fuel flow in cruise. As soon as the weather clears I am doing a 4 day cross country to Pezulu Tree lodge near the Kruger, up to Mussina and down to Madikwe. Viva Xenon !! xxx

Hi FlyNote

Can you tell me more about the new 11th Xenon due to arrive in South Africa soon please ?

I try to keep my Xenon Gyro Blog world fleet listing up to date - so far I know of 10 examples in South Africa as follows

ZU-EHT - red

ZU-EWY

ZU-EXU

ZU-RDC - white

ZU-RDV - silver

ZU-RDY

ZU-RGA

ZU-RGB - bronze

ZU-RGE -

ZU-RJM

Do you have any idea what "ZU-...." registration the new orange Xenon will become - and any idea of the construction number please - the current most recent example "RGE" is Xenon #125.

If any Xenon owners would like to send me a jpeg photo of their machine I will gladly add it onto the above Blog - Thanks

Regards
