Viable Cross Country Destinations from Rhino
Viable Cross Country Destinations from Rhino
Hi All,
I'm busy with my training at Rhino and I am looking to plan to go away for a 1 day fly away (once I have completed my training) from Rhino with a Trike. Considering 55mph and two up so that would limit fuel somewhat to about 1.5 hours i would think.
Would Loskop Dam be a good flight from Rhino or would it be pushing things?
Thanks (up front) for the advice!
Cheers,
Jaco

Hi Jaco,
Why only 1, 5hrs away? Plan a a flight with a refuel en route or at destination. Opens your horizons a bit more. Or if you are just being cautious and don't want to wander too far from the nest initially, then I accept that and commend you for your caution. Before you know it you will want to do some serious fly aways. They are great fun and there is no better way to see our lovely country.
Happy flying,
Andy

Why dont you think about coming out towards us at Aeroden. Not a long flight from Rhino. Fuel available at Aviators paradise (give some prior warning) and then the skies the limit. You can push north from there to Brits, North from Brits to zebula??? perhaps head further west to Rustenburg?? - Beautiful part of the world to fly around... lots of options.. but start with aeroden, they make a lekker breakie and a super 900m grass runway...

Are you planning on doing this on your own?
I would find out when and were the next fly-in is, and hook in with the rest of the crowd who are going. This way you have company, help if needed, fuel is usually arranged as well.

Hi Jaco,
If you've just completed your license be careful of over confidence. Fly to Bronkies, Microland, Bapsfontein, Petit, Springs, Delmas, Kitty Hawk. All these areas are engine out friendly and nice strips to practice your out landings, there's mountains to cross on the way to Loskop. Once you've flown around there for 15 -20 hours, then start progressing towards Harties through Pinedene (controlled airspace). Once you've built confidence doing this then there's no limit to where you can go. Try and get ready for Hazyview in September. If you want to go to Harties sooner - we often go and you could join us - just meet over microland and follow us. If you want us to add you to our mailing list, pm me. Just my advice, there are probably many other opinions

Would like to do a lekker cross country some time soon. Let me know what you have in mind.
I have been over to brits and Rustenburg it gets a bit bumpy!
Local outlandings will be a good idea for now but we have to fly out and refeul to get back.

Witbank for breakfast at the skydiving club on Sunday mornings. Might even get hijacked by a skydiver who'll stick a banana in your ear and demand to be flown anywhere as long as it's above 2000' AGL.

Flying to Groblersdal via Lossies is very lekka! In Grobbies are lots of good okes that will help with petrol if needed. Just arrange beforehand.

Hi Jaco
One bit of advise I was given when I finished my training was to go and fly solo, no passengers for another 10 to 15 hours by my instructor to hone my skills further. They knew my @rse was itching to take my softness for a flip when I got my license. It was the best advise ever as I did a few longer flights and found on many occasions the wind had picked up, or was crosswind upon my return. Made for some interesting times, but improved my skills at handling the situation better. You will be surprised at how quickly 10 to 15 hours goes by when you are enjoying yourself.
Don't know what your winds and weather patterns are like in the Transvaal, but here at the coast it can change dramatically within an hour.
Enjoy the flying, and all to soon you will spread those wings and be out of the cabbage patch.

Re: Viable Cross Country Destinations from Rhino
Hallo Jaco,
Laat weet my hoe jy voel hieroor..

Blue, I'm sure a few guys from Petit would love to fly out to your farmand camp there. Let me know details and as soon as the weather improves we can make a plan. Sounds great
