Yip, we've had the same problem but have sourced alternate caps. I will find out where we got them from and advise.

Addis admit it was a manufacturing fault. Gave Fanie at Microland a few extra new caps and they seem to last. Replaced mine and still fine.

Happens to me as well, and a friend at our hanger came with an idea,
when the cap is still new or not broken yet, you buy a white PVC drain fitting,
50mm female slip on to 40mm male screw on,you cut the male screw on section
off, on the cap you grind the small ridge on the edge off, clean the cup and
fitting with turps, put pvc glue on and press fit the pvc fitting over the
cup, make sure it's in up to the end,(thats the reason for grinding the ridge off)
Now you could tie the cup and the top can't break off,it works for me.The white
fitting looks bulky but the cup and container stays in use.

You can buy spare caps at Makro. They cost about R40bucks
It comes complete with big/small cap, washer seal for hose and small cap seal.

Go to your nearest Portugese Take Away place. The import cooking oil from Portugal in thick sided containers with leakproof caps. Search for the green ones with the yellow caps. I have 10 of them. Some of them is in use for 10 years already. NO leaks and no splitting even in the roughest off road conditions, we do around 20 000 to 30 000 off road kms a year for work.

Is being used for diesel, un & leaded fuel and water. The cap has double seal (similar to the seal in a water tight bearing) that does not leak and vent gas.

The thick sides also ensure that you do not end up with boepens containers in hot conditions.

Next best is metal containers.

I had the same problem with the caps of my Addis containers. Contacted them via their website and they sent me 10 solid black cap replacements (free of charge) without any problems so far.

Hi Guys

I am currently in discussions with Thys van Emmenis. He is the Executive Manufacturing Director of USABCO, the makers of the Addis products. I have received the yellow replacement caps for the fuel tanks but the inside seal seems to "dissolve". It becomes soft and spongy and the just breaks up. Apparently, I am the first to complain about this issue.

Anybody have had the same experience with the new repalcement caps (yellow caps) of their containers or just me?

Please let me know as they are currently investigating the problem and need some more info. You can email me directly so that I can give the info to Addis. If you have the inside seal that is damaged, please do not thow it away. They would like to have a look at it.

Thanks

I got some of the Mega Plastic's containers and have had no problems, standard use in most boats now. I got my in Durban from boat a rama guy there told me that they are approved by the UN to carry fuel, well if that means anything, I did take the seals out and replaced them with Cork just to be sure. The red containers where R160 , they also had clear containers think he quoted me R180. He had a storeroom full to the roof with these containers. No problem with the lid breaking,BUT I always do this myself ,could explain why. I have just fitted 3 of them to my aire to replace the small tank,45L, that came with the kit.

Here's the answer to the dissapearing seals.

Addis need to check their supplier for the material spec. It is likely that the Chinese supplier is making the seal out of BT6 - looks exakery rike the real thing, but not suited to fuel applications. BT6 will list the solvent as petrolium based. The correct spec would ne BT7 - quite a bit more expensive - hence the tendancy to go for BT6 which looks the same.

So... what plastic containers do you guys suggest we all use for in flight refueling systems? :?
Obviously the metal ones will be a bit heavy!

I just got a response from Thys at Addis. After my complaint, they tested their stock and found that the rubber disintegrated once it got into contact with the fuel. They placed all their stock in "quarintine" and will be receiving some replacements next week. They will be sending me some of the new filters, so let's hope it works this time.

Mega Plastic's has a branch in P.E. in 2 Boswell street North End, Tel:041-4873312.

The other alternative is " buy a bakkie, boet"

The answer to all the problems: Buy a proper metal Jerrycan. You get a spout for it which makes pouring easy, and you never have a problem with leaking, messing or static. etc. I just returned from a 10 000 km trip through Botswana, Namibië and Angola on some of the worst roads, with 4 Jerrycans on the roofrack - no problem.
