Tyre pressures

Postby BOATCH » Thu Oct 09, 2008 8:03 am

Hi I would like to know what is the tyre pressures to be on a Skyranger . We have gravel runways and they are not to smooth . The Skyranger has a verry little travel on the front suspension,so when the tyre is pumped to 1.8 bar it is hopping around when we taxi.

On the Bushbaby we pump the tyres to 1 bar only

This gives a sfter ride over our grassy runway at Lydenburg, but is also hard enough to prevent the tyre from moving on the rim on touch down, resulting in damaging the tube and valve.

I will recommend 1 bar to start with.

Hi BOATCH
I have also fiddled with this a lot in an effort to get a smooth taxi on rough ground and even tyre wear.
My aircraft empty weight is 290 kgs, normal operating weight arround the 430 kg area.
I run my tyres at most 1 bar, this prevents tyre creep but leads to uneven wear on my 800x6 tyres at the quoted weights.
Best wear for me is at about 1/2 a bar but I constantly have to address tyre creep, also makes for harder manoevering on the ground due to half flat tyres.
At 3/4 bar I find a compromise between creep and tyre wear.

One thing that i do like about the hard tyre is the acceleration but its not nice hopping around in the cokpit but thanks for the info.

Run Challenger on 1bar. Depending on size of tyre and aircraft weight one can adjust. I feel a tyre that only just start to flatten at the bottom works best, firm on rim but gives a softer ride and buffers some schock.
