Hmmm, wish I could get my hands on one, Rans have just put the S9/S10 back in production "due to popular demand" so bringing in a kit looks like an option. The Rans planes are easy and quick to build.

If aerobatics is the real aim the S9 might be a better option, to quote the Rans web page:

"The S-9 Chaos has been in production since 1986. The Chaos is popular the world over in aerobatic competitions and sport flying. A Chaos airframe is a perfect match for the new breed of powerful two stroke engines. A stock S-9 equipped with a Rotax 503 47hp engine is potent enough to compete in sportsman class aerobatics. S-9's have been equipped with up to 100 hp engines with spectacular results. With full inverted capability, a Chaos can whip through an advanced routine leaving little doubt about the plane and pilot's ability to finesse the figures.
Aerobatics is the intent of the Chaos, but the well behaved plane serves well for cross country or around the patch flights. Pilot workload is minimal due to the light control pressures. As with all RANS kits, the Chaos comes welded and pre-fabricated, reducing assembly time and increasing precision."

The kit price is in the $11k region, depending on options.

Fly safe,
Rudi

get your dad to bring you to Morning Star on sat morning. There are 2 Rans S10 and 1 S9. You can drool to your hearts content. Then there are big boys like MX2's Extras etc.

As far as the Rans S10 goes you need a fuel system capable of flying upside down. If you use Rotax then you have to replace the carbs with Mikuni constant pressure units. The Red and White S10 has a Hirth 100HP 3 cyl, fuel injected 2-stroke. This engine can and does run in any attitude including upside down.

Yes it can be flown on a MPL as well as a PPL
Hi everybody.

Does anyone know who the owner of the Hirth powered Rans S10 is, and maybe contact details?

I have acquired plans for an aerobatic microlight (two-stroke only, 4-strokes too heavy) and is considering construction, or may consider buying a Rans S9 kit. Anyhow, I have a 105 HP Simonini two stroke engine lying around for use, but reliability of the engine is still under consideration. Also, it will need Mikuni pressure carbs and it is liquid cooled which makes for a more complicated installation. I am would like to correspond with the S10 owner with regard to his experience and advice with the Hirth two-stroke engine (air cooled as far as I know?), especially as far as reliability is concerned.

Regards.

Water cooled. He has done quite a few hundred hours with this motor. Right in the begining there was a problem when the rubber dounut that links gearbox to engine tore, resulting in an outlanding. However this is the same product Rotax uses, so not a Hirth specific problem. Since then he flies every weekend, without any problems.

Based at Mstar I get to see the Rans in action. Strangely enough the S10 is faster than the S9 even though it is bigger being a side-by-side 2-seater! Does not make a lot of sense!

Being a two seater it is also more versatile and will have more space to store stuff for long trips. It is a pretty capable aero machine for the bucks and is even used in competitions and display flying in various parts of the world. There is a guy in Argentina who does some amazing stuff (low level inverted!) in his S10 - do a YOUTUBE search, you will be amazed!

I always wanted to learn to fly aerobatics, but unfortunately being only a little above a pauper :( most aerobatic planes are a little above my means. I considered the S9 for a long time, then I heard that Rans announced they were stopping production of the S9

Now its back. Good news, as there really isn't anything quite like it. Does anyone know of any for possible sale in good old SA? or maybe an unfinished project?

Cheers (^^)

Hey Trikenut,
You must first learn to fly "regop" before trying upside down

The Thunderbird that is manufactured locally is rated +8 ; -4 g’s.

I don’t think that it is rated for Aerobatics but I have witnessed loops ,wing overs and rolls in this aircraft.

Try a Rans S-10. I have one with 100 hp fuel injected with ballistic chute, aileron spades and inverted belts. Give me a shout. 0827827113
