BMW GS1200 motor

Postby KFA » Wed Jun 20, 2007 7:35 pm

Hi guys, Have gotten hold of a gs1200 beemer with only 8000km on the clock. Will this motor be worth experimenting with or should we just sell to another sucker out here     If so what can I get for the motor? :roll:Was thinking of another BB project.

Hey KFA
Very intersted in this developement!
If you not in a big hurry please wait till I get back so we can talk.
I think there are very good possibilities with that engine and now some know how in SA with Vliegvark regarding tuning, re-drive etc.
Lots of possibilities with BB airframes, new or used.
Cheers

Thanx, in no hurry. Just bought another kit and engine and thought this engine has huge potential. Looks like we got hold of guys that can remap the ignition and electronic system and supply dual ignition. Will keep you posted of future developements. Thanx Morph, I have been anciously awaiting Vliegvarks results.

Some people speak of "alleged" problems of cooling.
In a tractor propeller aeroplane the hot sides of the cylinders of this engine are not in the air flow.
It seems that it perhaps wouldn't so important because of the oil cooling. In my mind it would be worth to be careful and use a system as to cool the rear.

An other interresting topic is the "TAKEOFF" engine.
Have a look at this : http://www.takeoff-ul.de/
Did you know it ?
Unfortunately it is written in german.
However we can see the german baffles (my opinion is they could be improved)
This engine is equiped with an interresting centribugal clutch and a flector.

Could you ask them :
What is the price ?
Is there a hole in the gear box as to use a mecanical variable pitch propeller ?

The gearbox we use is from Take -Off I work together with Take -Off there is a place to fit the variable pitch. Once you use a presure cowling the position of the exhaust does not matter as the internal airflow is guided by the design of the baffles. The engine is discussed under the Safari because the Safari is being built for me and I'm going to install it taking all those foreseen characteristic into consideration. I'm the Africa agent for the gearbox have all the stocks and can deliver ex stock .Apart from the gearbox you need all the other items 2nd injectors 2X Eboxi's etc to make a full setup. We did all the research and developement for the ECU'S

Would a GS 1250 or an HP2 motor has more horsepower. Do your electronics work on them as well Oupa G?

I heard a rumour that BMW were considering discontinuing development / production on the Boxer motor in favour of the in-line twins & fours.... They are also focussing a lot of development on the four cylinder motors in the light of SUPERBIKE Racing...

There will be ample engines around then for aviation....

Sure the E-boxi will work on the HP2 motor. As a matter of fact the E-boxi can run 2cyl or 4 engine we have a 912S running on the E-boxi. It has made this engine super smooth. Regarding the cooling of the 1200GS it will be a proper pressure cowling with internal guiding of the airflow on VW engines you have two exhausts looking forward and two looking backward. On a 4cyl Lycoming the four exhausts point downward so the answer does not depend on the direction of the exhaust it is in the design of the baffles.

It depends what we get the motor for and what the owner can supply. We can give a Gearbox with all adaptorsfor the second injector double E-boxi's second pickup, all bolt on for R45000
THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE OIL COOLER OR EXHAUST BECAUSE THAT IS AIRFRAME SPECIFIC
You can now make your own sums.

One can therefore speculate on an approximate amount of R 70 - 80 grand for a complete solution... :)
