Unmanned airfield - joining procedures
Agree wholeheartedly with you regarding a private airstrip FF.
Problem is that the complaints have mainly come from licenced strips.
Maybe the problem is that when we have been operating for so many hours out of private strips, that we forget that there is a legal procedure when visiting a licenced airfield.

If any of you guys ever come to Krugersdorp- dont join overhead
from the North- Lanseria TMA is only 1000 feet above FAKR and the normal planes fly the circut at 700 feet- always join from the South or west overhead and then come into the circut- Krugersdorp is not keen on micros mainly because of poor joining procedures by micros- If a faster plane joins in behind you let him go in front

complaining on 125.80 about "a dozen microlights talking crap on the frequency"......
None of my mates were broadcasting, I heard NO other microlights....
I thought his comments typical of many GA pilots![]()

Getting your direction wrong is an honest mistake and can happen to both a micro and tin can pilot - refusing to join correctly at a licenced airfield is breaking the law. At least the tin can pilot corrected his mistake.
I agree skybound - nothing wrong with correcting yourself. The issue does not relate to joing overhead but an earlier thread. I was in the air over attridgeville and heard the incident Demon was refering to. Some guys just seem to take 'microlight' prefix in radio calls as an open invitation to assert their authority over the skies - creates the impression that airmanship is inversely proportional to horsepower

I drive bliks, but have respect for all aviators.
I think the seperation between microlights & bliks is inappropriate. We share the sky & we share the responsibilty that comes with flying.
There have been some generalised comments coming from this forum against us blik drivers, much the same as has come from the blik boys against ml pilots.
I haven't even got slightly upset by the comments here or on avcom cos there is truth from both sides.
I think that it is a fact that you have irresponsible pilots from every type of flying & these people are responsible for labels being given broadly.
To me, take pride in your own airmanship & live & let live.
I often fly at Rand early on a saturday morning when some ml pilots are coming in for an early brekkies. They have never had a problem with me, & I have never had a problem with them. It's all about airmanship & accommodation.

As another that flies both - it becomes a mission of one, to try and unite the fraternities. Generally in our neck of the world, I think we have got it right. There is always some friendly banter, but nothing that is ever destructive.
Maybe one of the reasons why I was so upset (maybe too strong a word) when a seperate forum was spun off for the micro guys, even though AvCom made accomodation for the micros. Felt that in itself makes a digital divide between the two fraternities. Not to mention it is a pain in the .... to read both daily.

Yes - its one of the requirments for my GPl- you have to keep the glider up for 5 hours in one ball breaking flight- The GPL is contolledby soaring society who has a minium sylabis for a GPL- The soaring society calls for a 2 hour flight but its up to each clubs CFI s discresion as to what the CFI wants- Our CFI (an old German guy ) wants a 5 hour - JAWOL I vill have to comply - Ja--- to get my GPL at our club- one of our members missed it by about 10 min and he has to do it all over again- I dont really mind asIs that a flight that must last 5 hrs in 1 go no getting out for a pss or leg stretch
a 5 hour will teach you how the day changes as the earth warms up
I all sounds a bit harsh getting a GPL and in the beginning I hated all the B/S but I am starting to understand that gliding is a not like PPL or MPL
and its kind of a culture you have to fit in with- Its a group thing where all the club members have to help each other- I lot of peaple give up (I almost did twice ) but i am now getting so hooked I havnt flown my power planes for about 6 weeks- Its the MOST rewarding type of flying i have ever done.
