MEDICAL AID COVER - RISK SPORTS
Hi all
Who of you know if you are covered in case of an accident whilst persueing our great sport?
You may think you are, but have you checked?
Those of you who have had the unfortunate happen, where you covered and who covered you?
I tell you why I am asking all these questions. I have been with a medical aid for nearly 15 years and they seem to be the only ones that do cover us for participating in Risk Sports. I have only a Hospital plan with them. Iam able to get a great comprehensive medical through my work for the whole family, but none of their options cover risk sport. The SA legals say you may not belong to 2 medical aids. So that leaves me covered in case of a flying accident with my trike, but without a comprehensive, so we pay for all other things cash. I have been and asked all over for an additional insurance to cover risk sports. They do not cover us flyers. I have been turned down time and time again.
So I must stay with the one Medical Aid, and loose out on my Employers 50% share on a comprehensive Medical. ( What a waste). No one is willing to insure us! (Bar one).
My question is:- Who are you Guys and Girls insured with and are you sure you are covered?
Do you know that Jet Skiing, Abseiling etc also fall into this category and if injured etc they dont pay? I am not willing to find out when I need it most. 5 and half years of no need to claim, I would like to keep it that way, but one needs to know one is covered.
Hope you can answer some of these.
Thanks

Whoa!
I'm training @ the moment, so I'll get my dad to check this out as he enjoys triking to.
The prob is that he doesn't have an MPL or a trike!!

You can buy accident insurance, including medical, to cover your flying, including microlighting, etc. and it won't cost an arm and a leg.
Suggest you contact Deon Langenhoven at DJ&A (011) 463-5550. Tell him I sent you!

I was told by mine, that if you had the cover for all the life insurances etc, before you started flying, that all you needed to do was to notify them of your change in lifestyle etc?

I had been in the fortunate position to test my emergency landing drill for real and my med-aid paid out and so did Ducks. I'm on the company one, Naspers, but Dukkie had a hospital plan. Maybe he can comment.

Aerosan - the Naspers is probably one of the best medical aids. I was with them till a little earlier this year - till the wife decided she wanted to stay at home with the pinkfoots for a while.
Re: MEDICAL AID COVER - RISK SPORTS
I have it in writing that CAMAF will cover me if I prang in a microlight. I actually changed medical aids because of this and that is why I joined CAMAF.
NExt question.
Who of you have DISABILITY insurance if you should get injured in flying accident and not able to work? I do - Sean Raath from Aircrew financial services organised for me. There I also have it in writing.
These are pretty important things to my mind - Enjoy flying, but think of your loved ones if something bad would happen

How in the hell did you get that right? It was the very reason that motivated me to leave CAMAF as they would not cover me for flying. Can you PM me who you spoke to and any other relevant details.
Re: MEDICAL AID COVER - RISK SPORTS
SKybound my man.
This was in 2004/2005 - I still have the letter, can't remember whom I spoke to though - But they were very accomodating. CAMAF pretty much closed fund (for accountants/auditors) with 90% of members being between 22 and 26 (articles), so I guess they don't have too many okes flying garden furniture
Did you come right with medical coverage for flying?
Cheers
David

Re: MEDICAL AID COVER - RISK SPORTS
You will be surpised - at one stage had 4% of our office flying, and CAMAF would not budge - this was in about 2003. Had heard a new high ranking person had joined the fund and he was a pilot himself and was told that I should wait a bit.
Have just read their list of exclusions on their web and see that indeed there has been a change. Think it used to be included in the para that says:
It has gone - perhaps they have caught up with the times. Maybe it is time I reconsidered - the tax break could make it cheaper than my current offering.
Now that the med aid is fixed - how do I fix my group life who has recently introduced the flying exclusion

Re: MEDICAL AID COVER - RISK SPORTS
They all just want to ride the gravy train and milk us pilots for a bit of dough!! Thats why there is all the exclusions.

I'm on BestMed and no problems with cover. I did have to specify though

Is it possible to join a med scheme in SA that covers us pilots but be resident in ZIM?
