And for those thinking of Emigrating.....

Postby Sad-Ham » Thu Aug 07, 2008 10:11 am

DIARY OF A MINING CHIEF ENGINEER WHO MOVED FROM SOUTH AFRICA TO DENVER TO GET AWAY FROM THE STRIFE.

Jan 24th 5:00pm.
It’s started snowing.
The first of the season and the first real snow we have ever seen.
The wife and I took out buttered buns and sat by the window watching
the soft flakes drift down, clinging to the trees and covering the ground.
It was beautiful.

Jan 25th.
We woke to a lovely blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape.
What a fantastic sight!
Every tree and shrub was covered with a beautiful white mantle.
I shovelled snow for the first time, and loved it.
I did both our driveway and sidewalk.
Later, the city snowplough came along and accidentally covered up our driveway
with compacted snow from the street but the driver smiled and waved,
and I waved back and shovelled again.

Jan 26t.
It snowed an additional five inches last night and the temperature has
dropped to around -11 degrees. Several limbs on the trees and shrubs snapped due
to the weight of the snow. I shovelled our driveway again.
Shortly afterwards the snowplough came by and did his trick again.
Much of the snow is now brownish-grey.

Jan 27th.
Warmed up enough during the day to create some slush, which soon became ice
again when the temperature dropped again. Bought snow tyres for both cars.
Fell on my arse in the driveway, $ 145.00 for the chiropractor, but nothing broken.
More snow and ice expected.

Jan 28th.
Still cold. Sold wife’s car and bought 4X4 in order to get to work.
Slid into the guard-rail and did considerable amount of damage to the right
rear quarter panel. Had another six inches of white shit last night,
both vehicles covered in salt and curd. More shovelling in store for me today.
That dam snowplough came by twice today.

Jan 29th.
-8 degrees outside! More fu@#$%g snow. Not a tree or shrub on our property
that hasn’t been damaged. Power was off most of the night, tried to keep
from freezing to death with candles and kerosene heater, which tipped over
and nearly burned the house down! I managed to put the flames out,
but suffered second degree burns on my hands and lost all my eyebrows and eyelashes.
Car slid on the way to the emergency room and was totalled.

Jan 30th Mother fu@#$%g white shit keeps coming down!
Have to put on all the cloths we own just to get to the mail box.
If I ever catch the sonofabitch that drives that fu@#$%g snowplough,
I’ll chew open his chest and rip out his heart. I think he hides around the corner
and waits for me to finish shovelling, then comes down the street at about 100mph
and buries our driveway again. Power still off. The toilet froze and part of the
roof has started to cave in.

Jan 31St.
Six more inches of fu@#$%g snow and fu@king ice and God knows what other kind
of fu@king shit fell last night. I wounded the fu@#$%g snowplough asshole with
an ice pick, but he got away. The wife left me, the car won’t start, and I think
I’m going snow-blind. I can’t move my toes, haven’t seen the sun in weeks,
and there’s more snow predicted. Wind chill 22 fucking degrees below!

I’m moving back to S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can empathise,

Stood at a bus stop, 100m from my flat front door, in Germany, near Stuttgardt,in 2001 at 6am in the morning, waiting for the bus to take me to work in Tuebingen.
When the bus arrived I asked the bus driver what the temp. was, -27 Degrees centigrade he tells me.
I swore then that that was the very last winter in Europe for me.

Kind regards,

Gunter Rostek.
