FLight condition I should not fly in

Postby extra300s » Thu Jul 31, 2008 1:26 pm

Hi guys

I have heard quite a few accidents that took place round about lunch time - lack of lift into obstacles = big crash.

So here in Cape Town. Is it a no fly between 12 O clock and 4 O clock. Or do I have it wrong? When should I not go out? Very warm days? Certain winds etc etc...

Any advice would be appreciated. Want to know as much as possible to keep as safe as possible.

Thanks
Karl

If at least 2 of the 3 H's is pressent: HIGH , HOT, HUMID then consider drinking instead of flying for the day. (^^) Otherwise just fly your hart out any time of day vhpy

Up in Springs we fly any time of the day! As long as you have a nice long runway and the earth stays round you WILL get of the ground eventually no matter what you fly! vhpy vhpy

Agree with ZS-NEL.

Also speak to your instructor who is training you. I am sure he has lots of knowledge of your local conditions. Watch the experienced guys. Speak to them as well. A lot of pilots are not put off by turbulence. Some will leave the skies and land at the slightest bump.
It's horses for courses.

Remember : Take offs are optional, Landings are compulsary!!!!!

Cheers and enjoy the training

The fairest Cape applies.
Watch out for Easterly winds. They come over the BIG mountains and can really spoil your day. Black South Easter can give you interesting landings but otherwise not so much of a problem if you gain height. Thermal turbulence during midday in summer not much of a headache and can be can be equalized by height.

Whenever you feel uncomfortable or the conditions exceed your abilities

Some people love high winds, others don't, some can handle turbulance others hate it.

Obviously never fly if not VMC (i.e. the weather doesn't allow VFR flight. rain, mist, low cloud etc.). Easterleys in the Western Cape as Ou Man mentioned are uncomfortable with a high risk of standing waves and lots of turbulance.

Location. High winds might be fine at Wintervogel but the same winds at Morning Star could be a problem. Easy conditions along the coast could mean massive rotors and turbulance over the big mountains.

Density Altitude!

There is a lengthy discussion elsewhere on this forum about it so I wont go into it here.
Every one of us should do a density altitude calculation as well as a weight and balance calc before each flight.
If you dont know how, go read up and find out, it could save your life.

Safe flying!

In a BLACK south easter you might be finding yourself landing about 45 miles WEST of Melkbosstrand JUST outside the international fishing borders between a shoal of deep sea SNOEK. Aparently NO hangers there either.

Morph, put that high density calculation up here for us please boet.

Agree with Jetranger. Density Altitude, W&B are silent killers! Many an aviator has either been killed or came close to it because of these 2 factors.....

Be patient you will see it is simple, if you are not 100% comfortable. Don't fly.
Must get airborne again
