i thought all microlighters are permanently rattled from the way those trikes shake(comment on Avcom)Maybe tongue in cheek
Why is there such a division between General Flying and Microlighters? I have been flying for 16 years and it has never changed. I have a great passion for all forms of flying and it just gets my goat whenever adverse comments are made either way.
My 2 cents worth

because they are jealous that we can afford to fly more and have more fun without all the laws and rules and planning they have to follow

Re: Them Against Us
It must be " I wish syndrome"
I have a great friend who is a first officer on the airbus for Cathay pacific, he came with me to the field one day and his words exact '"F$%^ Pieter, this is such an awsome way of flying" the wind that day was very bad, and he had to go back to Hong Kong I decided to taxi with him just to get some feel of a microlight, he was so impressed and once again said absolutly beutifull.
So it shows, coming back to my comment " I wish syndrome" I wish I could also fly a microlight when I am big.
And....
Yes I would love to do my PPL, I ave no problem with blik aeries, but I am happy for now and I will too fly a blik aerie, it is a matter of choice and what makes you happy.

Re: Them Against Us
I have done and still do them both and enjoy both a lot - but at the end of the day the wind in your face takes the cake.
Camaraderie amongst microlighters also perceived as much better

Microlighters are more social. End of story. (Maybe something to do with Alpha personalities or some other shit... I don't know and don't really care...)

Cheers George. I think I can say ditto to your comment.
Re: Them Against Us
I think the comment was firmly tongue in cheek and honestly does not deserve a reply. Me thinks that the "rift" is just a product of a few trouble makers and pilots who do not understand what microlighting is all about.
But honestly sometimes I think people are making a mountain out of a mole hill

Re: Them Against Us
That is why I put in brackets maybe tongue in cheek. As I said I have been flying for a good few years and it has always been a problem. Why I don't know as I have been involved on both sides and enjoy them equally.
Trust me 15 years ago it was a lot worse, so maybe I should be glad that attitudes have softened a bit over the years. I know there are quite a few members on this forum that fly the heavy metal as well and they also seem to enjoy the lighter side just as much.
Not my intention to make mountains out of molehills so if that was the impression my apologies. People in the aviation fraternity who know me will attest to that.
Anyway I have been out of microlighting for 2 years and it is now great to be getting back into it and meeting up with old mates as well as making new ones. Can't wait to get my next plane. Should not be long now

Re: Them Against Us
Sorry boet, my comment was not directed at you but at the so called "rift" in general. I think too much is made of it as people who are passionate about aviation love all types of flying!!!!

Re: Them Against Us
Arrrggghhh! It will never die if we keep bringing it up.
Let me tell you it never changes no matter what. When I was flying Parrotgliders, the Hengliders would rip us off and call us jiffy bags. When I changed to Hengliding the Trikers ripped us off. When I triked the Powapoopers ripped us off saying need a calendar to fly anywhere. Now have small Powaplopper (C152) the twin okes still rip me off saying I need to leave on a Thursday to get to a weekend fly in. I am sure the twin okes are ripped off by the bunsen burners.
So best reaction - laugh with them. Who cares we are all doing what we enjoy and as long as we keep it safe - c'est la vie.
or alternately the more scientific flub off:
Micro pilot (MP):So Mr Twin how much you pay for your aerie.
Twin Piliot(TP): R1.6m (Bragging)
MP:How long does it take you from A to B
TP:(Bragging) 1.2 hours, and you Mr Micro?
MP:(Keeping cool) Approx 4 hours 30 minutes. So lets analyse that Mr Twin - R1.6m for 1.2hours worth of fun. Mine cost R80k for 4 hours of fun. Who got their best bang for buck? You paid more, to do less of what you enjoy?
TP: ???? (Normally speechless)
MP: (Turn around and leave the scene with big big grin on face)

SB
Agree 100%.
(You will never win...)
PS
Just to add to the above.
Mr Twin's retort is usually. Ha well worth it, if I have engine out I just switch tanks and continue on.
Trikers retort is... If I have engine failure I land in someone' back yard, borrow a pantihose and some duc tape to fix the motor and am usually home by dinner... Failing which I call up Mommy and tell her to bring the trailer and we make a family outing of it...

Now digressing even futher - Reminds me of story (slightly modified to SA situation)
Cheetah pilot buzzes a Albat low level over the sea and does a roll around the Albat, pulls up alongside and says... "How about that busdriver!" Pretty impressive Albat pilot replies... But watch this...
5 mins go by and Albat remains straight and level and nothing looks like it going on...
Albat pilot asks fighter jock - Whatchathink? Pretty impressive hu?....
Fighter Jock.. What you smoking, you did absolutely nothing...
Au contrear monami (sp?), I stretched my legs, went for a pee, got a coke and pie and had a chat to the hostie.....

Bottom line of the above is - Horses for courses.... if you having fun and enjoying what you doing WHO GIVES A SHIT what you fly.....
