N12 at night!

Postby Flying fish » Tue Jul 15, 2008 8:50 am

Thought I'd share with you guys my experience comming back from Kakamas! (for future reference as it could safe your live) As you all probably know, I bought the "Spotless Cobra" from a guy on a farm in the Kakamas district. Drove through on Friday afternoon, arrived there on Saturday morning. De-rigged the wing and loaded the aircraft on a trailer. Farmer insisted we have lunch so, we only got away there about 14:00. The whole trip went smooth untill we hit Klerksdorp in the early hours of Sunday morning. (00:20) Fog, fog , fog and more fog! The visibility was about 1,5 - 2 meters at the most. Cruising along @ about 70 -80 km's an hour following the white line I slowly progressed towards Johannesburg now. Approaching the Lenasia offramp (about 03:00 on Sunday morning now and still fog) with three cars trailling me, I suddenly caught a "white" object in the road. Too late to swerve around and I hit a rock, probably the size of a loaf of bread (could have been bigger I don't know) at a speed of about 70 km's an hour. Instant flat and I had to pull over. Got out the car, next moment my girlfriend shouted "watch-out they are comming"! As I got out the car I instinctively drew my handgun just as the first one came around the back of the trailer towards my side of the car. I fired a shot in front of him into the ground which got him to spun around on his heals! As he ran back across the road I spotted two more and I fired another shot at them BUT aimed down onto the tar road. As they dissapeared towards the concrete wall on the side of the road I could see the dark image of the last one and I pulled another shot off hitting the wall about a meter or so behind him. Totally rattled with a panniking girlfriend, I got her to get in the car, lock the doors and phone emergency! While waiting for the cops to arrive (20 minutes later) some more cars were driving over rocks and what striked me was that NO-ONE stopped, they carried on! The next moment the buggers came back again. This time I had my flashlight out and I shined it directly at them warning that I will shoot. They disapeared in the dark without a sound! Cops came and stood there while I changed the tyre and finally got away there alive!!!!!! Moral of the story, DON'T STOP ANYWHERE EVEN IF YOU HAVE A FLAT, KEEP DRIVING!

That is so so sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am very happy you came out of this one unharmed. Strange that they did not take their guns out as well?

Imagine that, they would of hijacked your car and your wings! Good on you for fighting back! Why did you not aim at them I want to know? Never been in that situation, but I have been involved in a few fist fights. What I learnt there is that if someone attacks you you better react fast and any chance you get to fight back you must make it count. If you have the attitude of you do not want to hurt the guy and only give him a soft blow he is goanna bite back harder.

These buggers are used to be in a position of control - strange when lead gets tossed back at you and you gain the upperhand!

I recall the shootout at Jeppes - some of the Nigerians shat themselves when they were on the receiving end!

Good on ya Flying Fish.....

Several things come to mind here

We need to be able to defend ourselves.

The best form of defence is attack and ask questions later.

Traveling alone is not a good idea

Traveling after dark is a no no.

Need to modify tyres on vehicles so that they have run flat capability for several kms

Glad you came out of it OK

Kind regards,

Gunter Rostek.

My 2c rule:

Dead man tell no tales

That's when you have to shoot - aim for the biggest target, your not a SA pistol shot champion.

You gonna be busy with your att but your be living.

Well done sir.......... if 20% of SA`s population would take a non nonsense approach against the thugs and riff/raff we would have far less victims in SA. (^^) (^^) (^^)
