Battery swelled

Postby REDROMAN » Wed Jun 25, 2008 8:46 am

After flying and smelling something funny i opened my pod and found the battery was swollen up and warm like hell.Bought a new one and seems to be fine now.could it be that the battery was on the "going off" side and it was time to replace it or can it be something else that caused it.Raptor with 503 engine.

Same thing happened to me. Check your regulator quick. I guarantee it is overcharging the battery. It should read about 13-14 volts, mine was at about 17.1 V. The zener diode that is supposed to regulate the power breaks down and you get the full blast. The battery overheats and starts boiling the acid out. Eventually it the plates start buckling and the battery swells up.

Aviation Engines sell them or you can buy a more cost effecive one from Amptronic

Installed a volt meter with the new battery and battery was still charging over 16v.Checked everything and the only thing that could be faulty was the regulator.Got a new rotax one.Is there a spesific way to install these. My old one is placed inside my pod, will it be better to install it on the outside - because of the fact that it gets hot.

yes, as close to the engine as possible, but not on the engine. Somewhere on the frame. And it needs airflow to cool down
