Planning to train

Postby Trikenut » Mon May 26, 2008 6:13 pm

Hi
I am thinking about starting my MPL with Louis van Wyk at Fisantekraal. vhpy
My parents have done the research and just need to go do a medical! =D*
What would you guys reccomend I had in the way of books and so on to get started :?
I'm going to train on Aerosport's Aquilla 503, could I fly a Aquilla 582 after I have passed, with no conversion? vhpy :?
And a personal thing is flying with a fairing. I never have but is it nice to fly with one? :? (This is for guys like Gert Cotzee and Harlequin.)

Thanks
Ross

You have chosen a good school. We trained on both the Aquilla 503 and Aquilla 582.
Books I would reccomend are:

Microlight Pilot's Handbook 7th Ed - Brian Cosgrove (From Exclusive Books or Amazon)
Trikes - The Flex-Wing Flyers - Bartosik and McSwain (I got mine from Reiner at MGL Electronics Tel 021-8551383)

I think Aerosport uses Cosgrove's book for the theoretical part of the course so check before you buy. Gert recommended The Flex-Wing Flyers to me and it is excellent. If you only buy one book this is the one to get.

I would also suggest that you dont read too much of the theory untill you have had a few lessons and got the feel of the trike. I became an "expert" on aerodynamics before I started and spent far to much time trying to analyse what was happening instread of just flying. Other people may think differently.

Hi Ross,

I fly an Aquilla like Gert's with a fairing, when I bought the plane I had already pre decided that it was going to come off..... 50Hrs later and it is still on the plane - Honestly, I would not fly with out it now. Besides the wind/cold factor, it has caught my camera saving me some cash.

There are some good books out there, when I started my license I bought - Microlight Pilots handbook (Brian Cosgrove) and A-Z of microlighting. Both good books with heaps of help.

Good luck with the training, keep us posted.

(^^)

P.S As far as I am aware, If you do your training on an Aquilla (Z159), you can fly any aquilla - 503, 582....

Hi Trikenut

What is your plans after you have received your licence? TO hire and fly or buy our own trike? Asking as I am at the same stage as you - Planning to train.

Buy a trike as soon as you can afford it. Will save you time begging for a trike to hire or loan and increase your flying time. Have bought a trike before I started training. Was standing for 8 months in my garage and will only be used within the next month. Completed radio course to date and trying to arrange for the license in one go.

Thanks Carel
I have a friend who says I might be able to fly his for a while.
I'm not 16 yet so I'll have to do a few years training before i can go solo! :(
