Hi there Willie

My humble interpretation of the AIC is that the ZU stays the same and that the first letter of the callsign is dropped and replaced with an "R". (I am making the assumption that the CAA are, perhaps wanting to use the "H" for helis and the "R" for other rotorcraft - they don't spell this out). The only exception, it seems, is if your callsign already begins with "R" (based on my assumption above), in which case you are already sorted. If I am correct, then it seems that your new 'handle' will be ZU-RBL :?: . Only thing is, if I am correct, are CAA happy that this will possible lead to a duplication of registration numbers?? Eg: using your callsign, if someone else has BL as the last 2 letters (say, FPL), then there will obviously be a duplication. Numbered para 2 does seem to duggest that the callsign will still comprise 3 letters and not be 4 with the "R" prefix.

I too would like to know if anyone can help here.

Cheers

ZU-EXP (or is it RXP :? )

There was reply on Avcom. looks like all new registrations from June will be as stated. Don't know what the situation is with already reg'd aeries. Mine ZU-RVF will stay, but no new fixed wing will get R or H reg's...

I would assume that "to be assigned for all rotorcraft as from the date of this AIC" applies to future registrations only. I have not seen the AIC so perhaps I should read it first, but thats what I was told it says.

Without exception, all the type certified helicopters I have ever flown were either H or R registered anyway. Some that come to mind off the top of my head are ZS-HWM (Bell 206B) ZS-HXF (R22) ZS-RDO (R44) ZS-REM (R44) ZS-RBP (R22) ZU-RCH (R44). I was lead to believe they ran out of H so went on to R for the newer registrations.

So this probably simply applies to ZU now as it has for ZS all along?

Somewhere along the line CAA lost the plot and were simply allocating heli's the next avail reg. Also if you applied for a certain reg it was granted if you paid the fee. I tried for GAB (my initials), but was told it only for Gliders. RVF was only for Rotor craft, but I sent the form in anyway and got it.

CAA have confirmed that it for new registrations ZS & ZU forthrwith.

PS
I assume it will help ATC. I often get cleared for the pad
