Hi,
Just wondering whether a pitot tube is a tube of a spesific diameter?? Do anyone know of a place in cape town and surroundings where I can buy one??
What do I do with the static port on the altimeter on a trike, or do I just leave it open?? How will this affect the accuracy??
Regards,

Pitot tube is just that....a tube. Make one yourself. Aluminium tube about 200mm long with 5-6mm inside diameter. Connect the airspeed indicator flexible tubing to the one end and mount it anywhere on the plane out of the propwash, facing forward.
Static port on the ALT stays as is because it's not in a "sealed, airtight" enclosure.

Airspeed, altitude, or brains....you always need at least two

Yes on conventional BLIKS and other aircraft, the inside of the cockpit is closed and there is a pressure differential between inside and out. Because of this, they have to provide for an external static port. Your trike is open so the static port, as long as it is out of the direct wind blast should be close to the ambient pressure.
NB: on pitot tube angle the tip wrt flying attitude. So when flying it will be parallel to the ground.
Any hardware store sells the tubing. Be careful when bending, it can kink.
Also, lastly, when you run the flexible tube, make sure there are no kinks, the cable ties are not squeezing it shut. Check for the possibility of kinks being introduced in flight when there is airflow across the tube.

Re: Pitot tube & Static tube
Thanks for the help. I did as was told, and now the wait for my banana pod has started. Hopefully I will recieve it on the latest Tuesday.
Question: On the crashed Jabi I saw that the static port on the altimeter, was connected to Pitot tube for the asi. Wouldn't that have a effect on the altimeter reading if you fly different speeds?
Regards,

That sounds very wrong. Static port goes to all the pressure instruments. Pitot only goes to ASI. (ASI should be the only instrument connected to both.)Wargames wrote:Thanks for the help. Here is a simple pitot tube you can make.

Re: Pitot tube & Static tube
I will just confirm this. Maybe I got confused with the static port and presure port. Otherwise I will take photo.
Thank you.
Thank you.
