by dropping the clip one notch in fact lifts the needle and thus opens more resulting in a richer mixture.

You have a 582 right?
Frequent Flyer wrote: I also checked the main jet size - 158 and the needle jet is a 11G2
Rotax 532/582 DC main jet 165 idler jet 55 jet needle 2.72 needle jet 11G2 clip from top 3 airscrew 1.0 turns from closed
Rotax 503 DC main jet 158 idler jet 45 needle jet 2.70 jet needle11K2 clip from top 2 airscrew 0.5 turns from closed

It looks like you have 582 needle jet but 503 main jet. If it is a 582 your main jet is too small and thus running lean and hot

So instead of all of us actually believing the EGT's we assumed they were faulty. Meantime, it actually is the wrong jet size. Lesson learned. Is it possible that these carbs were taken off a 503 and installed onto the 582? The main jet size and the clip position seem to indicate so

This is correct for us down at the coast. On the highveld the guys would run on main jet size +- 152. You need a smaller jet, because there is a lot less O2 in the air. 152 was ok at alt of 4500ft. So this can be a reference point. a 158 main jet would do no harm on altitude, exept that your fuel consumption would be more.

Mind you Postmasburg is at 4200 feet so at that altitude @ 20deg C equates to 158 jet size. But in cooler weather and at lower altitudes you will be tending to run leaner. I would rather tend to a richer mix jet. If you ever fly down to the coast or very cool weather as Mogas mentioned you will go into a very lean mix and holes through the piston

yep a 582 (80hrs since new) plugs are nice tan colour - will take a pic this afternoon after flight and post it (hopefully my AP can help me take out a plug and put it back again) . my calculations also shows a 158 mainjet (kuruman is @ 4370'' &@+/- 20degC) o and sorry i did lift the needle jet (now on the lowest / bottom notch) but readings still higher.

Stephan, stop lifting that needle. It doesn't do nuttin' at wide open throttle. It's completely out of the needle jet by then. Put it back where it belongs and put 160 main jets in.
165's are for sealevel.
Then, go read the plugs........that's the safest. If the plugs are ok then just use the EGT readings as references, especially as you already determined that they are working.
Now stop fiddling and just fly man! ## ##

152's in a 582 at altitude = holes in pistons = plenty $$$$$

160's- it is then. Thanks - dont like fidling but like things to be working 100% and i rely on temps a lot while flying - to me, one of the most important.

Why not get a handheld temprature tester (Plenty on the market for cheap - less than the cost of replacing pistons) and take and independent measurement as shortly as possible after landing.
