Inexpensive hour building / fun flying in Cape Town area:

Postby diver » Mon Apr 07, 2008 4:31 pm

I have a Cubby and considering the cost of hire and fly aircraft lately, I have come to the conclusion that the Cubby and Tri-Cubby are good aircraft for hour builders etc. and / or inexpensive fun flying particularly if it is owned by a syndicate.

There is a Tri-Cubby (nose wheel) for sale (R180 000) – Eg. for six partners (which can work if you have the right partners) you are looking at R30 000 per person and you will probably recover your full investment when you sell – that should keep dad happy if he is paying for your hours towards a Comm. OR it is a great aircraft for local fun flying.

Based on my present budget the approximate costs are:
This aircraft runs on Mogas (petrol) – 13.5 lts per hour at R8.70 / lt = R118.00 per hour plus maintenance provision. i.e. R250 – R300 per hour for fuel and maintenance.
Monthly fixed costs per person for hangarage and insurance R200 – R270 (insurance cost depends on each partner's experience and hangarage depends on location).

Or if you are looking for a taildragger there is a Cubby for sale with a Jabiru engine (runs on Avgas so will cost a bit more to run) for R200 000.

If you are interested and would like some help with putting a syndicate together let me know.

Regards, Trevor
