NGK Spark Plugs

Postby REDROMAN » Fri Apr 04, 2008 2:53 pm

The recomended spark plugs to use on 503 is br8es or b8es.Does anybody use the br8eix (iridium)plugs. They are very expensive but saves fuel and engine runs smoother.Want to try these but not 100% sure of what Rotax would say.Is there anybody who is flying with these.

dunno,

I used Irridium in my bikes and got 48,000km out of the plugs instead of 6,000km. However this is in a 4 stroke engine.

The issue as I see it with the 2 strokes is the oil build up that causes carbon build up on the plugs which leads to spark problems. I'm not sure if irridium would work any better.

Additionally, be careful of using plugs with a high heat range than those recomended.

I use them. No problems whatsoever.
Flippen expensive though. They do last longer.
I use one heat range colder than standard.

ps. This is NOT an endorsement. Just my own opinion.

How much more expensive are they? If they lasting nearly 8 times longer than the br8es, considering the hour change on them?

If I remember correctly, they were in the region of R110.00 per plug. I imported the last lot because I couldn't find any here in SA. That price would have included shipping.
"Lasting longer" is probably a misnomer considering that the maintenance schedule calls for a plug change at 25 hrs. Even the BR8ES can last much longer than 25hrs. What is more important is that it will still fire effectively even if the plug gap is 1mm big and will normally fire clean through most carbon build-up when the BR8ES has stopped firing due to fouling.
At that price, that's cheap and effective insurance for me anyway.

Maybe I am wrong, but on 2-strokes with AUTO LUBE I us a set of plygs for 50 hrs plus, without touching them. Then replace just to make myself happier. Still looked just fine when I took them out... It seems that with the auto lube, the proneness to fouling does not exist at all. vhpy
