To import or not

Postby bergdwerg » Tue Mar 18, 2008 8:17 pm

Looking at whats available in the states, wow.Got hold of Jeff, the importer, sent me 5 page expl on shipping and taxes etc.Who has done this before, can i ad say R50 000 to a/c cost to get it here!.Engin costs in SA, feel like importing a jallopy, keep engin and throw away rest.Kitfox 4 kit for 7500$, hell i want it.
I think 80% of S Africans is but R40 000 short of his dream aircraft, just out of reach, mainley engin issues. We need alternatives soon!.So importing, is it worth it?

I assume you peak of Jeff Sharman. I bought his RV4 and he shipped it here for me (even came out and put it together and test flew it as part of the deal. he is in SA at moment delivering a RV6A. If I had the boodle at the moment I would import another RV. On the whole it was def worth it. jeff not the cheapest around, but he did exactly what he said he would. I very happy and it was about R400K cheaper than having one built here...

Problem is with the cheapies (it $7500) is that it almost cost more to import than the plane costs. Maybe see if you can get a couple guys together an see if Jeff can do a deal (if he can get 4 aeries in a container it will already save R5K? I would love to import one of those rubber duckie trikes

Just a word of warning. If you want Jeff to do the PPI, USA is a beeeg country (duh), so if you can find one on west coast (ie CA) then his travel costs to go inspect are significantly less. For eg, to drive to Texas from CA (just next door) took 16 hrs... or $750 flight.

PS
Jeff is ex SA (Lanseria) boytjie, but he refuses to deal with CAA so you may need to do your own paperwork which is not a big deal. (I will help in exchange for a flip)
