I read the manuals and took my aerie to Gideon at 300hrs, he replaced all the rings and normal things but left the crank decision to me.

After Mr Hyena got hold of my bird I took it to Flo who opened her up again, replaced the necessary parts after opening her up. He sent tolerances to AE and the verdict wast that she had about 290 on the clock. It was actually 440hours at the time.

He noted my decision in the logbook not to replace the crank and he will be opening it up on my behalf again at 500hours for a status report.

However, my ATF is due June so we will see what gives...

You okes all fly too much. 3 hours in a trike is all you need to maintain your pilot's license.
Eventhough I don't work in that line anymore I am a qualified petrol and diesel mech. Do these ar$&#h*les for one second think i'm going to send my engine to some AMO to give it to some incompetent guy on the floor to repair? No way. I've heard too many horror stories of engine failures, undercarriage failures etc after aircraft had been overhauled or repaired by AMO's. You have to put your life in someone else's hands and take out another mortgage to do so.
I sometimes get confused............But i'm not sure

Hi Ranger,

Your hour meter still broken??

Here is my worry. I take off my engine and send it to AMO to TBO. When it arives at AMO, he gives it to an rookie working on his floor to do the TBO. Who will handle the engine with more care, me or the rookie. Of course I will!! Then what is the debate about. If they want us to be safe, I want to do own maintenance. Is this to difficult to understand??

Hour meter? What hour meter? Because I only fly 3 hours a year i'm looking for a minute meter. At the moment i've got one of those old parking meters and it's attached to the ignition system. If you don't put any money in you can't fly. Only problem now is with the overhaul costs i'm constantly flying overloaded because of all the loose change i need to carry with me sothat the engine doesn't stop in mid air when the red flag pops up in the meter. Running costs are so expensive now, i'm using the meter as a rev counter it's spinning so fast.

What you need a rev counter for?? When practising those gliding skills, it's worthless!!

Gents, the problem here is that even if you do glide with the engine off as much as possible, have a broken hobbs and barely managed to log 3 hours per year, the 5 year clause still catches you........

I couldnt be bothered with all the b/s, i will just find another powerplant that is hugely reduced per hour to run , that the manufacturer considers safe for 1000-2000 hrs, and doesnt come with exessive "conditions".........


Seeing as the number of inspectors is slim vs the national SA foot print maybe we should just make a sticky topic and have their movements trailed :roll: :roll: on a daily basis so we know which fields are on the daily inspection agenda..... the way i see it, they can only cover two fields at a time :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

yes we can use aviation code words like "chips guys it's that Fokker?" to warn us.

and we can use clever WW2 tactics and cover all the airfields with camo, so that they are not even visible from Google Earth. Paint all the tops of the aeries camo and the bottoms blue so they will be difficult to spot.

No here is a noble idea worth supporting :P

Just remember to post some pics of what the inspectors look like, and a couple of their disguises. Might get very interesting.

Gentlemen... I have had a very interesting day. I have discovered that there is not anybody currently qualified to do this overhaul in Cape Town anyway. Aviation Engines no longer have workshop facilities. I have therefore offered my services to attend the next Rotax course to enable us to have somebody here in the ass end of Africa attend to this matter. Problem.... I will still have to get an AP rating from our beloved CAA. I have used a micrometer and vernier for 32 years and understand the critical tollerances that these okes are screaming about. Bottom line... if it's worn you have to replace. I hate this as much as you as my authority to fly has been refused and my current one expires tomorrow. So where do we go? Fight them or join them....help me here. I WANT TO FLY.......Do you? I'm talking about the totally legal scenario insurances bla bla bla. I hate this as much as you do I think we are pissing against the wind lets find a sallution so that we can keep our comrades happy and we can drink beer talk ...yes whatever and just be mooi. Eish! Hope you love me in the morning! HE! He! He!

There was a rotax guy based in stellenbosch. Maybe the people in GP don't know that we are 50km apart. I'll try and get a number there, I think he was based at stellenbosch airfield!!

Okay you brought it up. Did not want to go there...but here goes. Had a long chat to the person you are refering to. He does not seem to be particually interested. He still needs to attend a training course to be able to do this stuff. I would not have opened my mouth before I checked this out. Spoke to him personally this morning and various other people in the Cape Town area and had a long chat to Niren at Aviation Engines. I rest my case. If there's any other current dead wood out there please stepup and help us poor flyers out.

What?? Are they all playing dead untill it is enforced and then they bite us?? Or are they a bit upset that we don't like the idee of them maintaining our plane. This gets me mad. Now suddenly nobody wants to take responsibility. If this is the case with you finding nobody in wc, do they really want to kill microlighting here with nowhere to service our planes.

I can't understand it.

What is the difference with you doing the work and an AP signing your plane out, or a rookie doing the work at a AMO and the manager signing it out??
