Can just imagine them sitting on the runway watching the plane coming in for landing straight towards them and only realizing at the last minute they need to get out the way vhpy

Looks like one chap in nose centre (green shirt) is thumbing a lift. You could be right, this is a pick up point.

In Ladybrandt a glider came in to land a couple of years ago and the pilot heard a thump after touching down. They found a decapitated body next to the runway in the long grass. Apparently the oke took a shortcut through the airfield grounds to town.
