Most difficult landings

My worst landing is nothing when compared to landing on the back of a bakkie. We were flying from Uitenhage to Paradise beach, Jefferies Bay in my Windlass Streak ( ZU- WXC) when the WX turned really bad. There were 3 of us and I thought that “today Im going to meet my maker”. We were thrown around like a paper bag in a dust devil- at times being pushed down at far more than our little 503's could counter and we would stay over the beach incase we were not released from the downdraft in time and had to land. When we were finally released we would climb as much as possible only to have the cycle repeated. On finals I called Paradise “long finals” as I was too scared to turn and had the bar in as far a possible just to get there. Some clever dick on the ground asked me to adhere to correct joining procedures – “forget that Im coming in straight” was my answer (not so eloquent though). I approached on final approach sideways and regardless of how much power I applied and how far I pulled the bar in - I could not get the nose to come around more that 45deg, so I kept my head and landed anyway. It all ended well and I got down safely with a bent front wheel and bruised ego but nothing else. Next morning I had to take a friend flying to get some photos of the area from the air. I was scared as hell but after take-off all was well again and I ended up flying home later in the day but will never forget how much I sh#$%t myself that day. One last comment is that after that day I was far more confident in crosswind landings. …… oh yes my mates all landed fine also but we all agreed that it was the scariest moment in our flying careers. .

Try that today and you would need CAA approvals, ASSA display rating, 3rd party insurance, special endorsement on your license, 25hr mpi intervals on your trike, 2 way radio and air speed indicator calibrated in kts in the bakkie and you would be persecuted as a lunatic on internet sites world wide. Others would scream PHOTOSHOP...

Personally I think it awesome and optimises what fun flying should all be about...

the objective should remain: If you fly an assembled Kit Aircraft, attempt to keep it assembled at ALL times

My 22 knot crosswind landing just don't compare to your story Demon

Couple of us caught in wind one day, 4 guys landed before me.

Advice to guys in this situation, if your buddy (me) has not landed yet, and you have landed, don't scream like a madman on the radio just after you touched down saying that you almost rolled and how terrible it was - Does not do much for the confidence of those still in the sky.

I smoked 5 cigarerettes in 5 minutes after landing that day

Ya....I now feel like that little schoolgirl in the Kentucky add on TV...the kids had to tell what they did for the weekend, each one tried to outnumber the previous one until the one oke said they had Kentucky over the weekend, that stunned the others speechless, guess that's what happened here with your bakkie landings Demon.

Actually that bakkie might have come in quite usefull.

I new something was wrong when the sky turned brown and the ground blue, and I needed full throttle to taxi to the holding point

A couple of years ago, I flew down to the Transkei with Alan and Kevin. We decided to fuel up just past the wild coast sun. Ground speed at about 120mph in places. So Alan and Kev went in first (cliffs ahead). Then the wind started with me still up there. I turned into wind and was doing 6mph backwards. Landed perfect but took 1/2 hour to get off the beach as I couldnt taxi. Alan still has the video somewhere ??

Hey Morph, I know the feeling! Had failure on the left undercarriage while landing at the DELTA 200. It was all good till I turned 90 degrees left and parked!
