Hi all,

Herewith a quick summary of what I think is the BIG problem of MISASA.

NO COMMUNICATION.

That is it. If, and when they learn how to communicate what they do to their members, no one will be grumpy about anything, because they will know that misasa is doing their jobs.

Its the old story. If you want to impress your lady, do not tell her that you have washed the dishes. Make sure she see you wash the dishes.

It is not the members fault that they don't see what is happening. It is always nice when serving on a commitee, because you know what is happening. But it is also a responsibility to communicate that to the members.

Just my 50 cents of advise.

Alan & Jay,

The MISASA effort is coming after the fact - why was all this effort not put in when it was needed? All the histrionics would have been avoided, and MISASAs position as representative body would have been strengthened.

It is indicative of the decline in MISASA support if you have someone as passionate and vocal about the sport asGadget to change his position from "SHAME ON YOU!!!." (see his post, March 27, 2007 - viewtopic.php?t=4157) to "I, like many others, are fed-up with MISASA and their non-communicative nature. Look at the membership numbers for this year and you will see. " (his post in this topic, February 27, 2007).

Now let me preempt your response to this question
I know I am not a member of MISASA but was a paid up member when this was supposed to be dealt with so I am entitled to an opinion.

As for the recurrent fallback argument that MISASA is an organisation of volunteers and do not get the support it needs. Volunteer or not, once one accepts a position of responsibility one need to act appropriately. The response so far to Fanie Deysel and with Mervyn Reynolds (voluntary) initiative shows that microlighters can get involved and will get involved when the need arises and asked to.

Again, support Mervyn and Fanie by making your deposit today.

MISASA

Postby alanmack » Wed Feb 27, 2008 8:25 pm

Hello Gert

Mervyn is a friend of mine and we have discussed this matter at length. Believe it or not the last time we spoke (this afternoon ) it was about spending Xmas 08 together and not about cranks. Suffice to say that I respect his opinion and guarantee you that if ever you are in need of assistance Mervyn will be the first to offer his help.

MISASA recently launched a new website as a communication tool. Sias and Rudi did a fantastic job in putting it together. It is not designed to be a chat forum but is intended to offer references, stories and feedback. Please send stories to alanmack@iafrica.com. Stories for aspirant MPL's would be a great place to start. How about you writing a story on
Why Fly?
Where to start?
Do I need a plane first?
Can I fly with my dog!
etc

Alternatively, write a story to convince the MISASA Committee that because they volunteered to help they owe the membership who have the right to service from them. This would be a good story because right now there is a risk of closure. If this happens then I hope there are massively deep pockets about for going the litigation route on each matter that comes up is going to be very expensive indeed.

The latter issue may be a story you could write. If you are prepared to offer the time I will arrange for you to buy Enver Daniels lunch and he can explain to you what is involved in suing the State. His office is in Cape Town. Enver is the Chief State Law Advisor and he is the Head of the State Attorneys Office.

I give time to MISASA communications which is limited to the time that I have available. Should there be someone else out there that would like to take over from me I suggest that they send Mike Blyth an offer. I am willing to stand down with immediate effect at any point in time.

Mike Blyth is himself prepared to stand down and in fact if you ask someone who attended the last MISASA GM they will tell you that Mike tried to stand down at the last meeting and tried to get me to accept the job. I believe that I have neither the experience nor the time to spend hours each day dealing with Pilots issues. Try one day and spend an afternoon with him. His phone rings constantly.

Anyway debate is always a good way to flesh out matters and I urge you to enjoy the debate.

Ah, a different response.

No, I don't think the legal option is the best option, but the miserable failure to preempt this fiasco forced those of us who are despondend to happily fund the new initiative.

I used to contribute to MISASAs newsletter when I was a member.

I was hoping that this topic would not be hijacked by the proMISASA faction, but rather be one of support for the new initiative.

When the costs of this case goes from 50000 to 250000 to 500000 is everyone here going to donate R25000? heck you could replace a crank for that

Cranks etc

Postby alanmack » Thu Feb 28, 2008 9:50 am

Gert has shared with me off line his MISASA hassles. They are too numerous to mention here and he certainly has cause to be grumpy.

On my side I too get grumpy. The last time was when I tried to get input on the design of the website. I set up meetings in Jhb to discuss the framework of the website. Mike Blyth, Rob McFie and Rudi Greying were all that attended. I had an apology from Herman Dormehl who later gave input. I had input from Donald Hicks in Durban. Then I had a call from a person in Cape Town who let me have it for about 40 minutes about what a xxyyzz I was and how dare I not have a meeting in Cape Town 'cos the guys there are willing to help but get left out etc.. So, with my ear pinned back I got onto the Internet immediately and booked a trip to Cape Town at my own expense. I gave notice on this forum and offered 3 meeting venues as I recall. Yep, you guessed it - no one responded, yes not one person. Anyway I had fun - some of the time - went sailing off Cape Point etc but lost my glasses so I had to go sulk at Meerendaal over a fantastic lunch whilst I got used to my "Clicks" spec's - Thanks lads for creating the urgency for the long week-end.

What is the real problem? My view is that we are a collective, a club if you like but this club established to represent our best interests has too few people volunteering to meet the expectations of those that do nothing. Paying fees does not give you a right to services it gives you a right to contribute and to vote to suggest what to do with the money. You do have a right to get your 3rd Party certificate etc but if more people did a little then the aggregated input would be sustainable. With too few volunteers they suffer burn out and get tired of the flack.

To change the "same old" moan - what about a new one > I also get grumpy about technical issues - at 230 hrs my engine has been fully overhauled. 1st time - my fault the Nemo story (new crank and everything else except tyres). 2nd time at 130 hrs since the time before - why - to comply with 150hr maintenance recommendation and when stripped new pistons etc were recommended & when it's open I feel you may as well save on the labour to open again at 300hrs? - Then 5mins into first flight after overhaul/maintenance engine ceased off Shark Point on 27 Dec 2007. So now for the 3rd time at 130hrs and 5minutes. Why am I grumpy - no body can tell me why and I know of two other planes that went down in December 2007 within the 1st hour of flight after an overhaul. I believe that we must be able to find the reason to learn from. If anyone out there is interested I will send you the short block and the piston/rings to evaluate.

PS I got my copy of African Skies & a hug, yesterday, from Trixie - yours is in the post - if you want a Zulu phone Herman on 083 299 6177 and not Paul.
PPS Go on shower Mervyn and Fanie with your bucks - It could not happen to nicer guys. They are genuine stars!
PPPS I'd be thrilled to receive stories from anyone - even if you are not a member of MISASA eg is the Western Cape / KZ-N holding a competition this year : Who like the idea of the Dam Busters Derby being held in KZ-N? Do you know about the Stil Baai Fly-away 1st week of April? The Vaalies are due to invade led by Alex Rudd the MISASA safety officer!

True but that has changed with the new website! Here is the list of feedback posts just on the NTCA part 24 issues, in the past month ALONE, since the site has gone live, so your comment is not valid any more...

February, 27: Update : NTCA Issues http://misasa.flyeaaforum.com/?p=451
February, 24: Editor Unplugged : Engine Maintenance and Overhauls http://misasa.flyeaaforum.com/?p=447

January 24: NTCA Part 24 Update http://misasa.flyeaaforum.com/?p=88
January 23: NTCA part 24 Progress - Aeroclub information release http://misasa.flyeaaforum.com/?p=87

and before that I posted for 2 months here on this forum in the MISASA section.

Some things to consider:
  • Legal route - may assist some - the good cop/bad cop routine does work sometimes.
  • The amount donated here so far will not get that far in a legal case. May get as far as covering the costs of the current letters sent. If the lawyer not an aviation law expert - could result in many hours of research required in order to tackle it. Easy for CAA to defend and quote sections of the CATS and CARS that an average non specialised lawyer may have to do some serious homework on. Unless the lawyer is doing at no cost, then it would not be ridiculous to say that the starting bill could be - pick a number between 50 and 100k.
  • MISASA/Aero Club is the only official body recognised by CAA. Good luck in convincing them to see otherwise - it is not in their interest to have another representative group.
  • Everybody's business is nobody's business! Some of you say that you were members last year - then why did you not engage your representative body before the act was even promulgated? YOU could have helped in stopping it.
  • MISASA is made up of voluntary members - and they are just like you and me - they are fallable.
  • MISASA communications have significantly improved.

This topic has drifted slightly, but my opinion;

No, I don't believe we can litigate against the state, but we can serve summons and at the least, force them to respond. If that response is positive with set dates and commitments then the effort would not have been in vain For that I'll donate to the cause.

I've previously made mention my opinion regarding club committees and certainly don't want to hold anyone accountable, but;

At least a over a year ago, David Daniels started beating the drums " Hier kom k@k voor", always supported my our most watchfull Skyhound.

After prodding for official responses, the response was "moenie worry, someone's seeing something and someone's drafting something"

It was obvious that a bit of negativity was displayed, but we were not privy to what. -" Don't bitch at us vollenteers".

Now if someone just said " Guys, here's k@k ahead, no 582's with ATF after January", or "we're over our heads and need help", most would have said" Jislaaik, what is being done and what can I do to help?"

This forum can go a long way to alleviate certain Misasa topics. Post the problems and see what comes up.

Hi Rudi,

I don't want to get into an argument over this. Al I want you to understand is that everybody is looking and waiting for misasa to sort this mess out. Now, we hear there is going to be a meeting. And then there is not even a report stating how the meeting went and at what date a statement will be released.

The NTCA report was quiet from 6 to 27 feb. The editor edition was only to entertain and not based on what misasa actualy did.

It is this gap of 21 days that is getting everybody excited, because "nothing" is happening.

It is based on this quiet period that I base my positive critisism on, and please see it as that.

COMMUNICATION was initially the cause of this whole problem (I think stated elsewhere) the Technical Head of MISASA was tasked with communicating PART 24 to the microlight industry....what was done by him.....NOTHING =D* =D* ........wonder how he is feeling now...?

Although a current MISASA member.......I will be leaving MISASA and joining a more in touch body like EAA !!!! .

Reason - maybe it seems personal, but it reflects the lack of cohesion in the orginisation...where individuals go on their own crusades. I have just found out that my AP status was removed by the same MISASA Head of Technical without any consultation whatsoever:evil:   Why - Although an active AP (MISASA Technical Head knew this) as well as an Instructor and school owner my AP status was removed because I was not a member of MISASA for a period of time.....nice hey...!

CAA have accepted all my Annual Inspections and 582 Crankshaft replacements until September 2007. After 6 months of trying to get my AEROCLUB AP number MISASA duly informed me that although they accept my experience, I will have to write the exams again.

I am truely disappointed in MISASA ^^.^

Mervyn,

We, the Western Cape Microlight Club (WCMC) had a club meeting on Wed 27th Feb 2008 and unanimously voted to put our support behind this initiative. The club has +/- 100 current paid up members. I have been nominated to represent the club on this issue.

Please call me once we have a better idea of process, costs etc and we will be prepared to provide assistance.

Hi Wargames,

Ai-ja-jaai, is all I can say..

Good luck to the guys wanting to deal direct with SACAA or 'the state' and their timetables. 21 days is nothing as soon as you add goverment into the equation.

I am tired of this topic, I want to go fly, can't wait for Saturday morning, now I am really out of this topic, we agree to disagree OK? Over and out!
