Hi Gunter
Thanks for all your info. Another question. What do you think about the Murphy jdm-8 as a kit project and what do you think about the South African Cubby. The latter as a fully built aircraft?
Best wishes
Andre
Beginners homebuild project- which one
Hi Andre,
The Murphy JD8 looks like a simple and economical single seater.
If build light will have good performance.
65-80 Hp is where your major expense will lie, the now expensive 582 and the expensive 912ul or 2200 Jabiru.
Notice on the Murphy website they do not make any mention of a VW conversion.Would be interesting to ask them why.
As alternatives to the JD8 also look at

and

Then last but by no means least, the most under rated kit in SA, the Raven from Carl Babst. Only negative is you cant build it from plans but I stand under correction here.
In all of the above you will have to first check with CAA what they require in terms of documentation and/or testing before commiting money for kits or portions of kits. Then contact the suppliers to see what they can or are able/willing to give to CAA.
In the last few months I have been looking at a VW conversion again and have come to the conclusion that a well engineered(COOLING is well engineered)) VW will have 65 – 70 Hp for take off and in cruise you need probably 30 -35 Hp to maintain straight and level.
The major cause of VW problems and short life is COOLING or lack of cooling.

have several conversions available to suit all pockets.
The majority of VW conversions are on the Type 1 (beetle engine)
They are available with Magnesium cases(new) or Aluminium cases also new but heavier and also more robust.
The Kombi type engine is nearly bullet proof and the early version of this engine was the basis of the Porsche 911 engine and they got 90Hp out of that engine as well as reliability. Many years ago quite a few KR's in SA flew very well with converted Kombi engines.
IMHO when going the VW for Type 1 route start off with brand new components.
The Cubby is a wonderful little aircraft, I have known the original type certificate holder for many years. Sadly he has now sold the manufacturing rights.
Down side is available as build up only. If you have a friendly bank manager then a Cubby at under R140,000.00 is a very viable proposition.
