A pilot lives by perfection , or not at all!
Guys wake up and take part in this conversation Alex needs all the backing as he is trying to look after the flying guys.
Make contact with him believe me it will help to save you folks lots of money and plenty more flying hours with the 2 stroke engines.
And it also helps to keep the market alive , think further.

582 CRANK HOURS
Hi all
I baught a silver top 582 on 356 hrs, entry in log book on 296 hrs states :
Overhaul engine, replace crank bearings, piston rings, crankcase, head,
barrules.
Presume the crank was inspected, and no fault find. It currently has
369 hrs and still going strong ....
Thanx

Re: Crankshaft hours
Absolutely, the more regularly you use it the more reliable it will be.TonyV wrote:I am not technically minded but I am told by Trevor and Rob Goudie and Alan Matson who are my AP's that the frequency of use rather than just plain hours on the clock is an important consideration.
The ones that worry me are the dust covered planes left standing in the back of hangars more months or even years at a time. Their hours are low but the bearings have dried out and the inside of the engine corroded. This is the problem, not the 1000 hour 503 used weekly

Crank Failure
My old Aerie had a 503 single ignition. I logged 520 hours without crank failure. I replaced the engine with a zero'd 503 DCDI and sold it thereafter. As far as I know the new owner had no problems with the engine.
My present Aerie has a 503 DCDI with 212 hours on the clock. I had no hickups of any sorts since new. I de-coke every 50 hours with Wynns compression stabelizer and clean the filter and replace sparkplugs on a regular basis. I haven't opened it yet as I believe in the wize words "Don't scratch where it doesnt itch".
My buddy SHREDDER's 503 DCDI has 620 hours on the clock. It was opened inspected and de-coke'd at 600 hours. All was found to be hunky dory. He had no engine problems since he started flying.

Hi Fellow Aviators
Herewith info as e-mailed to Alex Rudd in support of MISASA's effort to prevent further unwarranted crank maintenance policy.

Windlass, 503 single ignition, 700 plus hours, redid rings as per Ap recomenadation, THEn the crank went after about 20 hours!
Aquilla 503 dual, 1000 hours and still running.
Two other trikes in GHT, both with high hours, logbooks probably not maintained correctly by previous owners, but both close to 500 recorded hours now.
Dont fix it if it isnt broken, fly regularly!

Why not make this posting into a poll along the lines of "what caused your engine out/ "e" landing". choices to select would be along the lines of "fuel", "electrical", "cooling system" "airframe/ wing failure", "pilot error", "never had one" and then obviously "crankshaft/ bearing failure".......
