Witbank 5 Jan (NOT!)

Postby Rudix » Sat Jan 05, 2008 4:33 pm

This morning Henni and myself left Rhino Park early, heading for Witbank and the monthly breakfast.

When we left Rhino the weather looked ok with a bit of wind but nothing to worry about. All was well in the world ! For a while..... Then we saw this on the horizon.

Image

Soon the horizon became dark, by the time we were past Bronkhorstspruit more fluffy clouds were forming below us.

Not long and it looked like this

Now there was no way I was going to get stuck above this lot! I decided that I will have a look below, a quick decent from 6500 to below 5500 produced a gap to fly in, there was still hope ! But by the time we were about 5 miles from Witbank we had a solid wall before us and a dropping ceiling. I have no photos of this as I was WAY to busy flying the plane and trying to find a way around. I decided to give Henni a call and suggest we turn around, at that moment I got a call on the radio from Dawid (from Microland) informing me that they spoke to someone at Witbank and there was a heavy storm over the field, that sure made up my mind for me !

We did a VERY quick 180 and headed for lighter skies ! Even so we still had to negotiate a few clouds there were very low and in our way but soon things were getting lighter, I sure was happy to see the sun again :D

Image

We then decided to follow the Microlanders to Afsaal, bathed in beautiful sun, arriving there we found a few trikes and a Gyro (from Kittyhawk)

Here are WOG and AEN enjoying the sun after our little "adventure lesson"

From there back to Rhino and a good breakfast and chat about our shared adventure !

I think the lesson was that you have to be so careful with the weather, it can close in real fast and you can end up in a VERY bad situation !

So that was the Witbank breakfast that was not, maybe next month ? Lets hope !

Fly safe,
Rudi

Hi everyone,

Nice pics Rudi! We were amazed today to discover how few microlight pilots are aware that the restaurant at Rhino Park is still open. We enjoy breakfast over there just about every Saturday and the food is really stunning! They make the best Rhino Mega Burgers around! Certainly worth any trip.

So if you are looking for an outing that includes a nice meal, be sure to consider Rhino - you will not be disappointed, guaranteed. Even to this day I find the folks over at Rhino to be the warmest, friendliest most down to earth crowd I've ever had the privilege to hang out with.

Thanks Henni !

Yes, I agree, the Rhino breakfast is a great meal served with a smile :D

The restaurant will be rebuild soon but till then business is as usual, maybe we should have a Rhino fly-in again ?

Here is a photo from this morning I wanted to post, Henni escaping the "gloom and doom" :D

Hi Rudi
Sorry you guys couldn't make it. Looks like you got up to early for breakfast.
We took off at Aasvoelnes at around 08:25 (Had to get some work done before breakfast...) We encountered some of the white fluff along the way but it lifted as we approached Witbank. First had to keep at 5500 and then 6000. We landed at Witbank at around 09:05. There was a Cubby on route from Sekunda and the C206 was dropping meat bombs. We enjoyed our huge breakfast, said thanks and goodbye and were on our way again. The Cubby left for Wonderboom, the C206 was on it's way with another load and we headed back. Hope to catch you guys next time. I haven't had time to look at the pix yet it was a bit hazy and bumpy. Maybe Yogi could post some of the ones he took. O, did I mention a short aerobatic display....

Cheers <*>

Henni and Rudix - sorry you guys couldn't make it. It cleared up beautifully after the initial thunderstorm.
The breakfast is held every first Saturday of the month - hoping for good weather next time.
It was good to meet the gyro and Sky Ranger guys from Aasvoelnes. I took some pics on the ground, will post as soon as I have a bit of time to resize etc.
Ja GK gave a good display with the Pitts, next time we should tell him to try and do it out of the sun :D
Our 206 was busy for the rest of the day, we had quite a few tandems.
See you all next month
