Prieska - another All Africa Record

Postby lamercyfly » Wed Dec 12, 2007 7:37 pm

Hi folk.

Today, Wednesday 12 December, Tony bagged another All Africa Record in his ATOS rigid wing Hang Glider.

His feat is truly amazing. He was the last of 4 gliders to get aero-towed, and after 12mins of wide-spread sink, he released, only to land 10mins later. We re-launched, under similar conditions, and I released him into the only thermal I could find, weak and patchy. He almost landed again, barely managing to scrape enough lift to slowly climb up to about 1500feet AGL. At this low height he set off on his cross country flight....an absolute 'bird-man' to have pulled this flight off!!!

He took off at 12pm from Prieska, and landed 40km short of Dordrecht in the Eastern Cape at 7pm, a straight line distance of approx 426km.

His flight took him via De Aar, Middelburg, Steynsburg, Molteno. Actual distance flown almost 500km!!!

Reinhardt completed a similar flight of 380km.

Later,
David Daniel

  Hey Brett, you would go and think of peeing hey!!

It is a long time, but there is not much time for thinking about much, other than where to find the next piece of lift, what speed to fly etc., etc.,

On a flight like this, the pilots lose up to 3kg of body weight, mostly fat burned and water loss...... Not much goes to the bladder, but what does gets let out through the zipper........That's why we learn not to catch our winkies in Zippers when we are lil' kids.......can be a bit of a problem when you are hanging under your glider

tomorrow will be a rest day, with lots of energy food, and then on Friday we will try again for 500km! Hope the weather holds.

Hey Demon, I'm flying the ol' Dragon back via George. Maybe pop in for a visit. Will stay in touch.

Cheers.

Let me know - will pop down and see you there too. Or if you end up short and want to stay in PE let me know - have some spare hangerage at Uitenhage for the aircraft.
