Boats comparison

Postby DieselFan » Mon Aug 27, 2007 5:16 pm

Went to the PTA show yesterday, nice not as many hordes as the Easter show AND MUCH cleaner...

Anyways my wife was looking at boats

125hp largish boat with a Mariner engine R100k new, leather, speakers, cd player, canopy etc.
200hp Yamama boat even bigger with loads of extras for 200k.

She said you can carry two people with not much luxury compared, and with a what size engine? Er "65hp at the coast, babes"

My uncle has had boats for almost 20 years ranging from 60x2-250hp and not once ever had an engine out?

The engine loads I would think are close aviation, the rev limits were similar too.

Her final comment

"see microlighting is a rich mans sport"

What say you?

Wait till you used that sales pitch,

" But trikes hold there value dear" and she inquires how much you're selling for. Those elephant tendancies then come clearly through.

Hi DF,

Yebo yes. I find it difficult to compare what we pay for trikes to what you can get for a similar value.

You can buy a new car 1.4l, EFI, 4 doors, 5 wheels (with spare), windows all round, wipers, locks, front load CD, inertia reel seat belts, light all round, etc. etc. for R 85 000.

Indeed John, I could not agree more. If you think about it, compared to the car, what a bargain a trike is. For only a quarter bar you get a new trike, and it can fly! ! ! ^*^^ <*> (^^)

The one fact that this thread does highight is that manufacturers and schools or anyone in the flying trade, must observe that they are competing against all other recreational sports.

They (boaters, quad bikers, hiking trail operators) are all competing for Mr Joe's recreational buck.

Sometimes I think this point gets overlooked.

Correct Kraaines, it is nice to get home from the airfield and not have to hose myself off with a pressure washer before being allowed in the house.
Also 2 hrs of quad riding normally results in 4 hrs of quad cleaning.
I find whenever we ride new terrain on the quad I end up thinking, what would it look like from 1000' agl.

And above in nothing

My rant

Postby DieselFan » Wed Aug 29, 2007 11:21 pm

We mustn't forget the social aspect. On a trike you got you and...on a boat you can take friends and family at the same time and with a 125hp engine! Each with leather seats, a nice canopy for the sun.

In Gauteng I can't see much reason for one but at the coast, it's not such an easy decision.

I mean sometimes in a trike / gyro the best view is one which ain't safe. So you have to see it from a distance anyways like a postcard.

You also then find yourself wishing all your buddies had a trike to enjoy it with you.

Anyways my take is

Flying is very addictive and yes undeniably the best way to see God's creation. I just wish more people could either

- be carried
- afford one
- do so with the reliability and peace of mind that a 912 gives.

You can take my house, you can take my car, you can take the shirt off my back - but you ain't taking my trike. Perhaps that should be my quote

Hi Dieselfan,

If you are considering buying a boat (which I think you are), then go for it! I've had many boats in my life whilst at the same time flying microlights, so I know.

Both are extreme fun, even in Gauteng, yes! Nothing beats loading your boat to capacity, with people, some even sitting on the floor, with stuff to eat & drink, and then go for a very, very slow pre-evening booze cruise. Been there many times and enjoyed every moment of it.

Best I saw at Jim Fouche pleasure resort once was someone who had both his caravan, boat and microlight there during the December holiday season - that's the way to go if one can afford it.

Go for a bowrider, they are the best for fun with family & friends. Just to give you some reference:

Fastest I had was a 19' Raven Bowrider with a 270Hp Mercury Mod VP bridgeport racing engine (*with a racing gearbox) which ran on Avgas & BP racing mix two stroke oil.

Most economical I had was a 18' Swift 176 Bowrider with a Yamaha 115. Very, very nice combination.

Most comfortable I had was a 20' Yamaha Sport 196 Bowrider wth a 225 Mercury.

If I had to buy again, I would go for the 18' Swift or similar with the Yamaha 115 - great value for money & extreme fun.

Hope this helps.

Then of course there's the best of both worlds:

Ever try wakeboarding behind one of those machines...................... or go booze-cruising......................... or deep-sea fishing?????????
Nah. rather buy a proper boat.
Anyway, been there done that. Unless you live on the water's-edge, a boat is a major schlep and you regret owning it after the 3rd outing.
A good friend of mine had a sticker on the side of his boat that read "this boat runs on expensive fuel.....not thanks a lot".
Nogal, you can and will pnly use a boat in great weather conditions anyway, unless you're a serious visterman like Demon.
Rather fly I say.
