Life Insurance and a microlight

Postby PhilWest » Thu Aug 23, 2007 12:18 pm

Can anyone give me some clarity regarding the views of insurance companies policy concerning microlight flying. I'm busy getting new life cover in place but i see on Sanlam's medical forms that microlight flying falls in the same catagory as dangerous sport like car racing ect.

Riding my quad bike at high speed is far more dangerous than flying with Gert Coetzee in strong wind. Any comments?

I just had to change mine with regards to my new found weekend activity,

I can only describe the Fin advisers tone as disappointed :)

apparently there is an exemption until i actually get the licence and then he says it gets loaded!!

not entirely sure what that means but am sure i will be finding out!

They will most certainly load it. What is interesting is that Sanlam only look at microlights as "dangerous" but anything bigger is ok. :?

I do not have any cover at Sanlam so i'm just using their medical form as an example.

Life cover and microlights

Postby MidlifeCrisis » Thu Aug 23, 2007 1:04 pm

I am in the process of getting life cover at the moment it seems Discovery life is quite acommodating provided you can prove you have a current licence and you can produce copies of your log book it would seem then there is no loading on your policy.

Old Mutual very accomodating also. When I started flying, contacted them, and no loading to existing or new ploicies.

You should not have any problems with liberty - I have a friend who flies trikes who is insured with them

Personally I am insured with Momentum - No probs either

Make sure you get it in writing that you are covered though.

Normally, existing cover will not carry a penalty, however, if you try a NEW policy, or additional cover after you started flying, it will be subjected to such penalty which varies from R40 - R100/month per R100k worth of cover - they screw you boet.

One would also normally renew one's existing policies every 3-4 years due to better rates and cover that insurers offer. Unfortunately it can mean you have to stick to your old more expensive plan you had prior to starting flying due to the more expensive flying policies, I am with Liberty and that is how they work.

Good luck, if you check the archives you'll see this subject has been and still is a thorn in your side.

I made Old Mutual confirm in writing that I am covered for flying in my disability and life policies. They loaded the disability policy though.

They seem to get confused if you tell them that you don't fly for a living and only for fun. So you need to be very specific about what you want cover for. They avaition forms I filled in did not cater for microlight flying and my broker had to get confirmation from their legal dept. Just make sure that they cover what you want to cover in writing.

I am in the game myself and the following would normally apply. On existing policies as long as you werent participating or had any intention of participating in aviation at the time of underwriting, there should be no exclusion or loading on life cover, however they may exclude disability. On any policy a standard aviation exclusion clause normally exists whereby they will not pay a claim if the aircraft was not a commercially registered aircraft flying between two CAA registered airfields by a suitably licensed pilot.

I have just taken 1 700 000 disability cover with Liberty and they loaded my premium by double, but even with the loading the premium is R 360, well worth it. Just ensure that you inform and disclose to the company all the risks for them.

I suggest you have a look at all main players in the Life industry. Each company has their own underwriting criteria pertaining to existing policies, new policies, licence type, hours flown and intended hours to be flown.

I know certain companies are allergic to MPL types due to the statistics they have at hand. This is one of the reasons I did a PPL instead of MPL. They do descriminate however!

I have mine through Liberty. The nice thing is that the loading only lasts 10 years and then falls away. Went through a guy who specializes in Adventue sports etc and especially microlights. I am actually paying no more then I was before and am totaly covered for death or disability on microlights.

Give me a pm if you want his details
