Postby Bennie Vorster » Sun Jul 08, 2007 11:24 pm

OK What will you pack into your always at hand emergency kit. Medical and non medical.

Except the six beers.

Emergency Kit

Postby Petrodactyl » Tue Jul 10, 2007 4:13 pm

This is a question that has been playing on my mind since being involved in the search for Neil Calitz. The sobering fact that a pilot can vanish without trace relatively close to civilization means that we all should think carefully about what sort of emergency kit we carry, along with the protocols we use when flying cross-country.

So far I have come up with this list:
Space Blanket (for both warmth and as a reflector to attract attention by day - maybe to catch rain water)
Fire lighting tool- Flint & Magnesium, Lighter or even waterproofed matches)
Torch - Perhaps one of those shake to charge LED jobs or wind-up
Dehydrated energy food - Bars?
Water - 2 - 3l ?
Small Mirror
Multi-tool - Swiss Army, SOG, Leatherman etc.
Basic First Aid - Swabs, Bandages, Disinfectant, Pain-Killers etc
Fully charged cell phone - carried switched OFF and well protected from accident.

Maybe a little ambitious on a trike- especially the water, but, along with a flight suit, might see you through a week or so, and give you the means to attract attention.

my 5 cents worth

1.a Pensel Flair or two, or even some of those fireworks jobbies that shoot high up into the sky, if you are looking for a cheaper option.

2.a police or rugby wistle.

3.a Set of spark plugs.

4. a point or two of two stroke oil.

5 a medic kit.

6. space blanket.

7. Big gas lighter.

8 Rope and duck type.

With apologies to those for whom the memories are still painful:

If I am correct, Neil wasn't able to use any emergency equipment, because he was badly injured or killed in the landing. Automatic Emergency Locator Beacons/transmitters may be something to consider - as a club item for hire, perhaps?

I seem to remember Horace Blok investigating something along these lines on AvCom

See this thread - viewtopic.php?t=4734 - I am playing around with it. Vodacom has a look 4 me service to which I am subscribed but it only works if the phone is on. Rightly so you want to conserve battery power on the cell on long journeys and you don't want it buzzing on the headset every 5 minutes while flying.

I make an effort to let the other half know my route and ETA's. I always SMS at every touchdown with location. If you do not hear from my by X o'clock start phoning the buddies...

PS: Bennie - Set of spark plugs AND plug spanner!

To me most important is a travel bag I have that stores 4 liters of water (Almost like wine sack - but very strong)

If you ever have to land somewhere other than intended for whatever reason you are bound to get thirsty

Bought mine at outdoor warehouse, virtually unbreakable and should keep you going while the mates look for you.

DH and I had un unscheduled landing in the middle of nowhere today (long story - nothing serious) - 4 liter water came in very handy untill we could take-off again :D

Om by te las, soos ek al voorheen gese het,n "4x4 tyre fix" vir die onvoorsiene pap wiel.As n 'outlanding' gedoen word is n pap wiel n groot moontlikheid.

I carry some inner tube cut into strips. Comes from my Africa days. You can use it to fix/hold/tie/burn/attach just about anything you need. Rope is not used north of the Zambezi.....its inner tube!
