Radio

Postby Dish » Wed Jul 04, 2007 11:41 am

Guys - Hi,

My radio seems to be playing up and is really starting to annoy me.   Not one to take short cuts and hope for the best, I have decided to replace it and keep the existing one as back upo. Currently I have an Icom - wouldnt mind replacing it with something similar. At the moment the radio stays in the plane but my plan is not to do that in the future, so it needs to be a handheld reliable pretty pwerful one - yad yada yada....

My point is I was told of a place in strydom park (n/jhb) that deals in this equipment, does anyone have their name and perhaps (at a stretch) their number??? :D :D -

From everything I've thus far read over here, it seems to me that people like:

1. Pieter de Necker (P-Prop)
2. Paul (Zulu1)
3. Nirren (Aviation Engines)

are in a class of their own with regards to the interest of all who visit this forumn. There might be more, but those are the ones clearly standing out since I've joined this group.

Just my 2 cents

A radio, is a radio, is a radio

All are capable of broadcasting and receiving on a frequency and all have very similar output power etc. Some you can pre program and others you cant. But they can still operate as a radio. Additionally they all have very similar stringent manufacturing controls in terms of quality, ability, durability etc etc etc.

Now let's talk installation. This is where the wheels fall off. Every plane is different, noise induction, power induction, inefficient aerial installation. This is the biggest problem. Replacing the radio (unless of course it actually has a fault like sockets not making contact etc) is not going to solve your problem.

I had a problem with compesite Tech boys as my hand held was 2 years old and the day I needed it as my a/c radio went on the bloggg at Grobbies and I plugged the headset into the handheld system it also did not work.

well the answer I got was it would cost me R1200.00 to repair but I should rather buy a new radio.

Man I was not happy, and so many of my mates were refered to them by me BUT never again china never.

Go for the after market service it counts plenty mate.

Previously I used an I-Com A5 and it was an awesome little radio. It connected with one jack plug to my Buzzcom system and I was impressed with that little radio, but now I have downgraded to a I-Com A3 with this crap little fitting to connect to my Speak easy system. Image

Annoying little contraption if you ask me. I'm thinking of replacing it with a panel mount type radio. Have to be a round one coz space is a problem.
Like a Microair M760. :Image

Is there any other make than I-com that might not cost me an arm and a leg. Actually handhelds should be banned from been used in micro lights. I think they are the root of all evil. I also have an A200 that is of a bit better quality, but that is still not very impressive.
