Remaining Current with no aircraft

Postby Bushpig » Tue Jul 03, 2007 12:50 pm

Hello Guys.

A great forum. I have had my licence for over a year, but dont have cash to buy my own Trike    . Are there any other guys out there who are in the same position? Is there a way to build up hours without your own aircraft? I just find that guys are reluctant to make their aircraft available to low hours pilots to build up hours for obvious reasons.

Where are you based. We might have a single seater aircreation 503 that we are thinking of putting up for hire and fly

I am currently in the Benoni area...but not for long. I am in the Nature Conservation field and find myself moving around a little. What do schools generally hire their aircraft out for?

Hi Bushpig

I kept myself current like that for a few years and it really put a ding in the budget everytime. Your best bet is to try to get an overdraft or a pilot that is willing to let you buy a share and then contribute to services etc.

If you were closer we could chat.

Thanks Tailspin. I have thought about doing that and will probably look at doing something like that when I settle somewhere.
What kind of money were you paying each time you flew or per month? Is it not worth taking out a loan/finance/overdraft? (Even if Tito has increased the lending rates!!)

Hey Bushpig

Goto Microland, many guys Hire & Fly there, but you might have a problem on Saturdays as they're VERY busy. Cost is around R500 ph. and takes up a learning slot.

Anyway Bushpig any time you want to go up in a 3 axis if you out west rand give me a pm

Thanks for the advice guys and for the offer Thunderboy. I will keep looking to see what I can find/do. If anyone hears of a trike, preferably an Aquilla going for around R50-R70 000, please give me a shout. I will keep an eye on the aircraft for sale section.

Bush Pig

Microflight adventures (Andy) at Petit will hire you a trike. He first needs to do a short check with you and I think the rate is R450/hour. Pm me for his number. Once you have made a decision give me a shout and we can fly together to Bronkies or somewhere. I hangar at Petit and am there most mornings or come and fly with me tommorrow morning as pax

Is it my imagination, or are trikes insanely expensive to H&F? I can hire a 4 seat Jabiru for R540/hour, or a Cessna 150 for R560/hour. Acquisition costs are about 3x higher than a trike, and operational costs a lot more too...

How does trike hire work out at R450-500/hour?

How much does training cost on a trike (per hour)? If it is similarly expensive, it may be cheaper to do a PPL and convert to a microlight!

Reasons for this is, not everybody is prepared to H&F their micro so the old storie, supply and demand that is why MPL instructors get paid more per hour than PPL instructors.

They idea is that they / the school could make money during that hour you take so they charge the same fee, even tho there's no instructor with you.
