Flying the MX

Postby C205 » Mon Jul 02, 2007 8:37 am

After two years of not flying I went up again on Saturday morning in perfect conditions in the MX, albeit with the talking luggage. It was really great to be in the air again and my first experience of flying the MX.
We have now (I think) mastered the art of starting the engine without flooding it, and keep it going (GENTLE throttle movements :D ) The first flight was rather comical as the engine stalled when starting to taxi, at threshhold or the runway and while lining up, every time requiring the instructor to unstrap himself, unplug the intercom, get out and pull the start rope (repeat about 10X). We've got to see if we can get an electric start for this baby.
Anyway, teething problems out of the way and we take off at a little more than walking pace. This plane doesn't fly, it just waffles and flutters through the air  . I was surprised at how sensitive the stick is, I used to fly gliders with a control stick and used to really have to 'roer die pap behoorlik'.
We just did a half an hour flying around and getting used to the plane. We noticed that thanks to the fairing and the slow flying speed its not cold in this aircraft at all. In fact if I had a cold one in my hand, I would be lulled into believing that I'm sitting in a lounge chair with my feet up. We fitted a kind of 'floor' (actually just a plastic lid) for me to put my feet on and this also keeps the grass, bugs, sand etc from clogging your teeth on take-off. Why didn't the manufacturers think of this?
The plane actually flies itself (much like the trike) when trimmed correctly. The only tricky part is taxiing, this I think will be the biggest challenge of learning to fly this microlight! Its wheels don't steer and while its fine when you've got a bit of air over the elevator and rudder, manouevring around hangars, etc is a bit tricky. Oh, and is it thirsty!
Can't wait for my next flight! This cold front is really messing things up.

Hi J,

Great to hear you're back in the air!

Those Rotax's don't like to run at low revs for too long - fouls the plugs. Always apply some throttle, even whilst taxying. Never had it die on me whilst on the ground.

Turning: Come to a complete stop. Apply full up elevator and full rudder with sudden short only bursts of power. When you get used to it, it works quite nicely. Always apply full up elevator when taxying slowly to take undue strain off the nosewheel.

Starting: Never found her difficult to start. Open fuel valve, open the throttle only a little, apply both chokes and she should start on the very first pull. On start, immediately close the chokes (normal mode) and apply a little throttle. When warm, apply one choke only when starting using the same above procedure. Always apply a little throttle for idling.

I've always said here that they are extremely easy to fly and very stable in the air - great to hear it off someone else for a change.

Glad that you are enjoying her!!!

Regards,

Henni

Thanks for the advice Henni, I'm still a bit nervous about applying power in the vicinity of hangars etc, but will get the hang of it I'm sure.
As for the start, I know I was impressed at how easy you started it, but we have now (I think) got the hang of it. :D
Will have to think about electric start tho, as neither myself or Johno are strong enough to pull start. We need a team of three just to get going! That's besides helping me to get in and out!
I definitely found the MX very stable in the air (must be the dihedral) and no problems with the throttle etc. Was actually worrying why I was so relaxed.

Now we need to keep the skydivers away. They're all over the plane trying to figure out how they're going to jump out!

Hi J,

Seems to me you can make some money whilst flying at the same time! Would be great if they can supply your fuel, then you drop them & fly for at least another hour before picking up the next "going vertically down mostly" flyer.

If it was me, I would definitely kill the engine completely just before every jump - I've started those 503's many times in the air, it can be done!

As for starting: The trick is to give it a strong pull, swinging the engine over quickly. I can imagine that this might be difficult for you, so an electric start would definitely be an advantage. I'm sure you're familiar with the thread discussing electric starters for the 503?

Thanks for sharing your impressions on the MX - I'm always keen to hear those.

Scuse the ignorance, but what is an MX? Could you possibly post a photo please? Sounds really nice! :D
