ETG = 680 degrees
CHT = 230 degrees
RPM = 4300
idel RPM = 1000
Rate of climb 400ft p/m with two up and full tanks.
I don't know if the VW motor will like to keep performing for a long time 4000 rpm cruise or will this cook the motor. Should it perhaps run on a bit lower rev's.
I am thinking of fitting a 72/55 pitch prop in stead of a 72/50 pitch that I have fitted on the moment to bring down the rpm.
Another option is to play with the reduction drive pullies to bring the rpm down a bit but I'm scared the prop might start cavitating at full throttle.
Though some guys suggests that there is no problem for the VW to cruise at 4000 rpm.




Other than that I am as happy as can be. I should do my license during the school holidays in two weeks time.

Well done. Hope you have many hours of hassle free fun. I have only been flying a VW engine for 6 months and I limit the CHT to 210 deg and max cruise at 3500 rpm. Perhaps a slightly courser prop will do the trick. I, like some others believe that the less the engine has to turn the longer it will last. Good luck.

remember when you increase the pitch to reduce the static RPM and cruise RPM you also reduce the rate of climb. You don't want to end up with a climb rate of 150 to 200fpm on a good day because on a high temp day with density altitude coming in to play you will struggle to get off the ground.
Maybe the Cubby pilots can give us an indication of the RPM they cruise at. They use the VW motor a lot.

Glad to see your BB flying Bennie, I second what Boet says, don't change the prop.
If I were you I would try to build up about 20-30 hours flying where you could emergency land at any time. During that time you will be checking your engine's reliability and learning all about it and the aerie.
After that time you will have more confidence in the engine and know it's operating temp and pressure ranges well.
Then do a nice Xcountry over the mountains and come visit us in the Lowveldt!
