Bushbaby hydrolic brake system
Has anybody got a hydrolic system that works on a bushbaby? I was also looking at a dual control brake system. If the student has sole control of the brakes it could be a disaster.

Ooops, can one of the moderators please move this to the technical talk?

Yes KFA, we have a hyraulic brake system that works. If you are a VERY patient person, to get a hold of it. I have had the cables of the mechanical brake system reworked, and the mechanical system now WORKS just as good as the hydraulic one --- at a fraction of the cost. To make it a dual system is no rocket science either. You can contact me on 082 8041896 for more details. Do you want to use BUN for training?? :D

Yes, that is why the dual brakes. I don't like the idea of a new student being totally in control of the aerie.
The current problem is that I take between 300 and 400 m to come to a complete stand still. It is no problem at our field but prevents me from landing at friends places.
I will give you a call tomorrow.

Bushbaby Hyraulic Brakes
I am also the proud owner of a new Bushbaby, but I am very dissapointed with the hydraulic brakes. They came with the plane, and despite my best intentions, I have not been able to get them to hold the plane for a static power check, even at 4000 rpm (912S)
I was even contemplating enquiring whether it is possible to replace the current pad with a slightly softer / higher coefficient of friction material.
I have involved Monty, he completed the build for me, but to no avail - so if anyone can help out / offer some advice on what to do, I would really appreciate it.

Hi Dobbs, I took out the old donkey pads today and will have them relined tomorrow. I think it will solve the problem. I do not think the mechanical brakes are a problem, they should work fine. I just think that the lining should be of a softer type of material to bite better. Will let you guys know if it helped.

When you get you BB back, invite Boet to spend a weekend with us as a guest.
Very interesting chap and the undoubted BB expert.

we have discovered that the manufacturer of the BB mastercylinders was using the wrong type of rubber o-rings. The automatic transmission fluid used in these brakes was eating the rubber away. Get back to Monty and ask him to have the seals replaced. Myself, GR8-Dad and a mate Kees, who has just finished his Explorer have just I have just received ours with the new seals. We have tested in Kees's plane and there is a world's difference between previous to now.
Alternatively speak to Boet, he will help you

The manufacturer was very gracious in admitting the mistake made, and replaced ALL affected master cyl`s free of charge. I must add that the replacements has been slightly altered, and works MUCH better. Now world class. To get to the BB`s brake system. Hydraulic. The hydraulic system that I use can hold the BB at FULL POWER. I have however found it nessecary to modify Monty`s pedals slightly. ( Sorry Monty :D ) See fhodie attached. Both the master cyl`s and the slave cyl / wheel assy is manufactured locally, and is of outstanding quality. The only downside, like I remarked, is the TIME it takes to get hold of the stuff. The systems is made in different locations by different manufacturors.
Refer to the pic of the Master cyl fitment. To make your brake system dual, you need two extra master cyl`s, fit them to the right hand side, and "T" the brake lines into the left and right brake lines. Sound simple? Right?...... Wrong
Entails a bit of welding for witch it would be wise to remove the engine. Firewall and all.
It would be wise to decide exactly WHAT you want brakes-wise, while still assembling the aerie.
Note also that the TOP of the master cyl`s are anchored to the firewall, and when you apply brakes, the whole BODY of the slave cyl`s moves up when braking is applied. The brake lines I buy from Hyflo, 4mm hard, white nylon tubing with a 6 bar rating. Easy to install, wirks fine, you can SEE air bubbles in it, and the price is right.
NOW: Cable brakes. The ONLY prob with these brakes has always been the cables. The outer cable is manufactured using the wrong material. The inside cable is to thin. When you rally STAND on the brakes, all you do is shrink the OUTER cable, and maybe break the inner cable. I have my brake cables made up specially to my specs, and my mechanical brake system is near as dammit as efficient as the hydraulic brake system. I allways keep a set in stock, so you are wellcone to contact me.

KFA, I read with interest that you are replacing your linings soon, are these disc or drums?
I went though the compatability issue, took a number of very frustrating days to work out - eventually got brake fluid compatible seals, but still sit with the current problem.
Boet, to buy the equipment installed in the photo's, should I talk to you or Monty?
Thanks for the feedback thus far - hope to be back in the air within two weeks
