Bennie,

2 ure ge-taxi?? Ek dink daai Vola enjin was so warm, jy kan n hele krismis maal op hom kook. As a rule of thumb, some aircraft engines are not designed for prolonged ground running. You need a LOT of airflow to cool the VW motor down. Remove the cyl heads, barrels, and replace the piston rings. I think the compression loss is probably due to ring collapse, as a result of exessive heat. Next time you get the bloody boat anckor running, taxi to the active, AND GET WAAAY UP THERE! :!: Please take a couple of detailed shots of the cooling baffles. There might be a prob there too.
Have a lekker `un

Priester, doen jy nou so een keer in JOU lewe ook iets nice. Gee jy net vir ou Ben die geldjies vir n nuwe 582tjie. Man, hy sal tog SO dankbaar wees. Alle grappies op n stokkie. The original owner made the fus LONGER. That means the tail will now be too heavy to EVER use a 582 engine on this particular frame. The smallest engine to use will probably be the 912. Now VERY expensive...... To all the greenhorns out there: In Aviation there are many pitfalls. Ask some of the old hands for advice when you are not sure about something. Better still, ask more than one old hand his honest opinion. Then you really can be sure. :!: :D

Bennie,

do you have an accurate weight and balance of the plane, per wheel. Also if you can give me the weight of the engine. We can do the calculations and see how far back the CG will move if you install a 582. Then we can see what will be needed to move the CG forward again, i.e. installing the battery up front near the nose etc. Worst case would be to have to add weight up front to keep the nose down.

BTW flying with the CG too far back is moerofa dangerous, the plane is highly unstable with the tendency to stall easily and you need to keep lots of forward pressure on the stick/trim to keep her level.

Alternatives, Perhaps the Hirth 80 or 100 hp two stroke motor. Being used here in the Western Cape quite successfully, although the last fatal Trike crash at Saldanha had a HIrth, albeit the non fuel-injected version.

Otherwise look for a 2nd hand 912 but I suspect that this would still need a bit of weight moving to keep CG in check as the 912 is only 10kg heavier than the 582.

Hi Morph

I had a look at this option for my VP and figured that i will almost need to move the engine forward 10 - 15 INCHES  the Rotax engines are almost half the weight of the VW but it is doable.

Strongs bennie i am thinking about you.
