R/C Flying

Postby Wart » Mon Apr 02, 2007 1:14 pm

OK, so my divorce is almost finalised so I will be back in the air soon.

I am also looking at taking up RC flying; anyone got any pointers and comments for some-one starting out. The nearest RC field is only 10 minutes from where I stay so it is great for Sat & Sun afternoons when the wx is not great for real flying!!

Hi wart

Girlfriend wanted to get me started with R/C flying as a christmas present. So went to a shop and had a look around and asked for assistance. Very nice guy helped us and basically his attatude was that he will give me pionters and show me around but it was up too me. He said that only 30% of the people that take it up continue...

There are some very good beginner R/C aircraft out there. You can even go for electric now!!!

But as with all hobbies make sure that you want to do it before going full hog. What is also worth getting are the R/C simulators. That will get you used to flying something that is coming at you!!!

As a pilot you have a huge advantage over someone who is not.

Hi Wart

RC Flying is realy rewarding, only problem is that you can only fly when the weather is nice...same time you would fly in a trike.. I have lost a plane Saturday due to strong wind. Lucky for this hobby... cost me R800 for new trainer plane and flying again...

Hi Wart

The guys on AVCOM started a new section on RC flying. A lot of answers and contacts for new RC flyers there. It is under the heading Model aircraft.

Worth the look.

Go to the R/C club, and chat to the guys there. They will be able to tell you who the best local suppliers are, and may even be able to hook you up with a decent second hand trainer, at a good price.

DON'T go to your local hobby shop - they will either sell you something way more expensive than you need, or sell you a piece of crap that is going to get you so frustrated that you will give up after a week. (OK - you do get some good hobby shops out there, but they are few and far between.)

Also arrange lessons at the local club. You might be able to teach yourself with an electric trainer, but it will be much cheaper, and much less frustrating to just get decent training from the start.

Ja Gert.... any weather is nice weather for you  Daai was 'n lekker trip, al was dit kort. Ek sien die wind het jou trike ook beskadig nou die dag... Hoop jy kry hom vinnig reg.

Dit is 'n trainer wat ek gevlieg het die oggend, maar dis ongelooflik hoe kwaai die wind gewaai het daar bo... Ek vlieg nog so toe besluit my trainer se vlerk hy gaan nou op sy eie vlieg.

Dink net jy vlieg nog so met jou trike dan gaan jou vlerk op sy eie vlug...

Kry spanners en draai alles vas!! :P

Demon, I am a convert! My first love in aviation is trike flying and always will be. I just see that I am going to have a bit of extra time on my hands and like the look of those little aeries buzzing around the sky.

The divorce is putting a further financial strain on me but as soon as it is over I will be back in the sky in a trike. It might take me a bit longer to own my own now, but one day I will!

R/C/ plane for Beginners

Postby AV8 » Tue Apr 03, 2007 10:05 am

I bought one of these. I think its a real bargain just to check weather you want to invest loads more money in the hobby. It flies really nicley and there is no oily exhaust gasses all over the plane once you have finished flying. It also makes a good trainer plane to prgress onto bigger things.

Stay strong Wart. I bought my first trike about a year after getting divorced. One of the most memorable cheques I ever wrote out.

Hello Wart

Women just don't like being second best

I've been flying r/c aeroplanes for the past 17 years and I'm not planning to stop soon!!!

Start by buying a trainer aeroplane. The Canary, Paragon is perfect to start with.

You will need a 40 size motor for this. I personally would buy a 53, and then you have a good motor for your second aerie later that will maybe need more power. Good engine types are: OS Max, ASP, and Irvine.

The radio must be a 4 channel. Again if you have a bit of extra cash, rather buy a programmable 6 channel radio. This will take the headache away from trimming the aircraft. More than one model can be flown with the same radio. All the setting for your different aircraft will be stored in memory.

I personally will only buy a JR or Futaba.

Then you need a couple of extras like fuel pump, glow starter battery and some fuel. I fly with Morgans fuel. A 5 liter bottle with 10% nitro will cost you R150-00.

Hope you enjoy it!!!

Hi Wart,

R/C Flying is great fun and teaches you a lot about real flying, a great hobby! Try get hold of Gavin Lundie, he is passionate about R/C Aircraft and will be able to assist you and point you in the right direction, very clued-up on this sort of thing. He was also the SA R/C model champion 5 years in a row! his no is 082 900 3173.

Kind regards
