Thanks C205.....Just out of curiosity, why were the circumstances of that jump unique? I thought that it was all pretty much standard - okay, the fella did land in the harbour water, but there was a considerable wind blowing and considering the realtively low height that he jumped from, he never had enough time to correct for it.....C205 wrote:The 'meatbomb' you refer to is a good friend of mine. The circumstances of that jump were unique (I have no inclination to get into that now). However, as Velocity will back me up, I have done two jumps out of a trike and not come near the prop which was running at the time. Trikes have been jumped many times before and since then with the engine running without an incident. As long as the jumper and pilot know about the hazard.
What did you fly this week
Wrong meatbomb, FAWG.
I was refering to the chap who lost his hand at FAWI as referred to by Redeye. He also landed nowhere near anybody's aeroplane, Redeye (I was unfortunately there).
BTW he made an excellent recovery, got his CPL back and is now the chief pilot at Witbank Skydiving Club.

When i organised a jump i had a detailed briefing with the guys before they jumped and they also showed me all the correct documentation from the CAA for the jump at that location for the day - But as a personal thought i shut down the motor as the dude can slip or anything can happen and then you have two problems - you and a meat bomb heading down in a big way.

I guess you are right he came down about 30 to 50 m from my planeHe also landed nowhere near anybody's plane
but when you look up at a guy comming down screaming and without too much directional control you are inclined to get a bit worried about your plane an the poor MB - I am so glad he came out of it OK- I dont know why he put his hand in the prop but I still think it would be better to switch off

Hope its going well and that you find your second aircraft---I know of a little fokker taking to the skies today at KittyHawk
Thanks Demon,
there will come a lot of changes for the aera, we will have fuel as Plett is too expensive, and we will sell fuel without profit

We will have free breakfast and coffee for all pilots 7 days a week :D
and
not even to mention, no service fees, landing fees and other hidden fees but free other services :D
Unfortunatly the fokker is a single seater

Hi FAWG Pilot & all
C205s response absolutely correct - you cant just lob anyone (or anything for that matter out your aerie) without the Commissioners approval. For skydivers it needs to be @ a recognised DZ or on a CAA approved demo or at a temporary DZ which is applied for by an PASA / ADZO member - every DZ in SA is an ADZO member and there are 3 of us I think that are classified as 'show-jump operators' (www.aerialfx.co.za - shameless plug I know
) Anyway opportunities often arise to jump where these permits are not in place and are often done safely and without incident and personally I think there are often too many rules anyway
Just bear in mind if there is an incident the pilot in command is ultimately responsible for what 'falls' out of the plane...
Re the E London Festival my partner was the organisor and I heard that the local jumper from G Town was told to land in the harbour as the organisors wanted a water landing
Re prop I used to think it was impossible to make contact with the prop unless you really tried to... I have been proved wrong so now leave it up to the pilot's descretion. Personally I prefer it on (not full climb just gentle cruise) as most of our jumps in Jhb area are from 2000ft agl or less (low by our normal standards) and I prefer the trike to maintain as much altitude as possible as low alt - low speed - awkward body position on exit - can all decrease the safety of the jumper. I do think that the prop off is safer for the jumper doing a microlight jump for the 1st few times and seems to make the pilot happier which makes us happier
The pilot can in fact do little to aid or hinder the jumpers safety - if the jumper is careless on the climbout / exit or slack with his / her equipment then HKGK. Apart from the prop issue the most dangerous part of tossing a jumper is the possibility of a premature deployment of the main parachute while airborne which in all likelyhood will deploy thru the propellor or thru the undercarridge of the trike pulling the jumper and bits of anything in the way with it
This is extremely unlikely but its good to know the risks up front - cumulatively(sp) my team members and I have over 500 microlight exits without a single incident of any kind so I think we are doing it the right way
FAWG Pilot we are in East London on 9/10 September (jumping Alo3 at Buffalo Park
) and will probably stay @ The White House again - will give you a call closer to the time.

Wind not bad at Rand, but at KT was over the hill and Dick said big windshear. Not keen to bend it on first day out.demon wrote:Hey jcvb, sorry to hear that, I never even noticed the weather today...

PS
The current broken prop delivers Vans specs + a couple easily? Maybe I am missing the boat?
