I gave the wife the 5door alfa, sold the Landy Disco, (v8 fuel usage  ) and bought a little 1400 bakkie. Best thing ever, carries tons of tools, fuel in the back, dogs to the vet, rubbish to the dump, cases of beer etc.

Apart from jerry cans nothing else will stay sealed. I use a piece of checkers plastic bag, over the gat before putting the top on. Stops it leaking. I also hate the Addis one.

Ditto on the Addis cans, crap.
Like the info about the steel jerry cans and will investigate.
So far have used 25lt chemical type plastic drums but put in 20lt, crush a bit with knees then tighten cap. This allows for some expansion of the fuel and does not pressurise the can.

Just a note to all with steel cans, remember if it's been hot or in car for a while tilt them back and open the lid SLOWLY otherwise the petrol WILL spray out. I often hear a woomph sound when opening.

Also the jerry's give a more miltary feel to the whole flying thing so if you use plastic you aren't a real pilot

Ditto on the addis crap... turfed them and got proper jerry cans... about the same price as the addiscrap at outdoor warehouse.

My car now has a lovely aroma of pre-mixed two stroke oil and petrol.

Something you should watch out for if you have spilled petrol in the boot is that wires under the carpet are not loosing thier insulation as a result...

It is a shame that the Addis cans are so bad, they are easy to carry, the correct size for mixing BUT THE CAP/Nozzle design/quality SUCKS !!!

If only the Jerry cans were 25L  I have used the white cans but I have had one (almost full !!!) burst in my car !!!!! What a mess !!!

On a side note, where can I buy the tube with the valve on the one end to transfer fuel? I hate the taste of petrol

Rudi

Have seen these jiggle pipes at a lot of auto type shops, try Midas, Autozone, etc.
Stick a filter on the outlet end.

Thanks Mogas and Demon,

I will go shopping for a "jiggle pipe" before the weekend :-)

The ski boat fuel canister sounds like a good plan, my collection of useless fuel containers are growing, hope this is THE one.....

Rudi

Leaking Fuel drums

Postby jabirusk » Tue Mar 13, 2007 8:27 pm

A friend of mine owns a chemical company and he gave me a few 25L plastic drums. They are rectangular and thick white plastic. The caps are also beefy with a serious rubber seal under the lip. I have seen these drums all over Durban so they are quite common. Why I like them so much is that I have been transporting 8 (!!) of them in the back of my Renault Megane Coupe Cabriolet during a refill stop and never once have I had fuel vapours in the car. The one time I left a half-full drum in the sun (!!) and it swelled up like a beach ball but never burst.Try a 'plastic shop' in your area.....
