Leaking Fuel drums

Postby Miskiet » Mon Mar 12, 2007 8:55 am

Hi All,

I recently bought a new car and I don't like the perpetual smell of unleaded inside it. I've gotten used to (and high occasionally :D ) from the effects of leaking fuel drums (I use normal 25 l white plastic ones) over the years. My passengers moan and groan about it......

Has anyone found a reasonably effective solution? Short of buying a bakkie and transporting them on the back.....25 liters is preferable as it makes pre-mixing easy.

Red Addis (I think) Plastic 25l Jerry cans, from Builders warehouse - They don't leak - Off course if you are pre-mixing you can't see the colour of the petrol either but my rule was pre-mix right before refueling the airy.

Still have a vague smell of petrol in the car though while transporting, especially if the car is a hatchback like a Golf.

Tell the passengers to get out and walk - Flying comes first :D

Cheers

Red Addis - worst money I EVER spent!! The little rubber seals tear, and perish, and not the can leaks like a sieve. What I do recomend, is getting a contact in the chemical industry, and getting a 25 litre from them. YEs, the addis one's are great size wise, you can put 1 next to the other on the back seat (trike) and strap them in. Jerry Can is the best pax, he dosen't bother you while you're listening to the ipod, but the chemical drums are round, and so only one will fit onto the seat for a cross country. I did see rectangular 25 litre's at a caravan shop last week, about 190 each. TO be honest, I am not impressed with the red addis, and you cannot get replacement seals (unless you go to Alaska), or spouts.

For me without doubt the steel containers from outdoor warehouse. They are perfect, they dont leak or let out any fumes. The green ones for petrol and the yellow ones for deisel. You can even load them side ways and still no leaks.

20L BIG -D, they are strong and durable and seal extremely well, also comes with add on spout. They are more expensive, if i can remember about 300.00 or so but i would not use anything else.

Took two with diesel lying on their sides all the way to tofo in mozambique and back and not a single leak.
I have the red addis one as well and for me does not work well at all. Leaks and smells.

I think I have not had leaks because I transport the Addis ones upright in a hatchback - Lying down, it probably would leak.

Must say the smell gets a bit much, I will look into the steel ones - Thanks

I don't premix so 20l is not a problem, but for the okes premixing it would be a problem

Watch out the spouts on the red addis, they have a nasty habit of coming off and dropping into the tank. Luckily my fishing skills with a coat hangar are up to scratch!! I dont pour anymore, just siphon.

Hey Big D I've got 3 steel jerries THEY NEVER EVER LEAK and car doesn't stink at all

My two green ones are 10l each and my other one is a 20l. All I do is throw 200ml oil in each and tell pump attendant to put EXACTLY 10l.

I prefer the 2x10l as it's easier to manage and I can always make sure I put the WHOLE jerry's fuel in. With a 20l I'd have some reserve and then it would stuff up my calcs when I want to mix.

They are MUCH cheaper at Makro tho - got my 20l for R120. Outdoor was R190 at the time.

I have both. Steel jerrry cans for going to Botswana etc.
They re tough, dont leak and very durable and can take rough handling.
Plastic cans for the aerie, maybe because of the 25 litre thing.

I use plastic cans, although everybody must be very carefull that plastic containers can build up static, makes that small spark when you touch them and POOF!!!!...........all gone sir!

Cans

Postby andreb » Mon Mar 12, 2007 12:27 pm

I agree about the Addis containers. Absolute rubbish. Have taken 2 back and now one has a broken lid. The seals and tops break. Car stinks.
Bought a green 20l Jerry from Oudoor warehouse and no more smells or spills.

Bacardi
Just check if the snow was from the cans. I heard of a guy putting lead replacement fuel into his tank and the same thing happening. Apparently it eats away the lining of the tank. Once there it is a huge problem to get rid of. I didnt see it myself, so it could be an urban legend.
